Backstory
Daiyu was born in Guangdong Province, China to two magical parents in 1983. She doesn't remember much of her life in Guangdong other than going to Muggle primary school before immigrating to the U.S. - she was only 7 years old at the time. Adjusting to life in the U.S. was difficult though. She had to learn two languages at the same time, except she often skipped Chinese school as often as she could. Her parents enrolled her in Muggle elementary school and then paid for private magical tutoring lessons involving charms, potions, and herbology. Since she couldn't control her magic very well, her tutor gave her a stick from the backyard to practice wand movements. It was a lot for a child her age, but she had her headstrong grandmother to push her forward.
Her grandmother, Sau Hung Yee was a fiery woman who stirred up trouble for magical authorities, particularly in the 50s and 60s. She was a spirited activist for both the Muggle Civil Rights movement and the repeal of Rappaport's Law. After appearing in a Muggle newspaper during a protest, magical authorities were sent to arrest Sau Hung, but she managed to evade them for years. After Rappaport's Law was repealed in 1965, the authorities stopped chasing her, and she finally lived a peaceful life with her husband. She entranced Daiyu with her stories of evasion, the secrets to hide in plain sight - of course, only using these methods when necessary.
Daiyu attended Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and was sorted into the Wampus house. Though she excelled in all courses, she was quite the mischievous student. She once received a howler from her parents scolding her, in Cantonese, no less, about filling the corridors with an experimental charm for sticky bubbles and how it brought shame to their family. But in the background, Daiyu heard her grandmother snickering, and that was all Daiyu needed to continue experimenting.
