Reparo: The Aftermath And Relationship Today
Chapter 5
Many changes were made in the United States in the aftermath of the Watergate Revelations. By order of the International Confederation of Wizards, muggles could only remain aware of witches and wizards during their tenure in office. The ruling allowed one exception for immediate heads of state, who were permitted to remember in order to advise future holders of the office. Since 1977, all other muggles informed of the wizarding world have, upon exiting their office, been subject to a specially crafted memory charm which allows for the easy reinstatement of the relevant memories should he or she ever hold another office for which the information is deemed necessary.
Training continues, but those who conduct it must register with and be certified by the International Confederation of Wizards.
In the aftermath of the 2001 terror attacks, a rift developed between the White House and the Department of Magic. President George W. Bush and his informed advisers demanded the Department provide magical assistance to the security and surveillance operations they had instituted to combat terrorism. Secretary Muriel Ball declined, stating that such assistance would be a flagrant violation of the International Statue of Secrecy and come dangerously close to wizard subjugation of muggles. In retaliation, President Bush fired her as "Council to the President" and banned her from the White House. Despite the position being reinstated in 2009 after the inauguration of President Barack Obama, the relationship has yet to fully recover.
