Threstral Lore

Chapter 5
This creature has a rich magical history and there are even records of Muggles sighting Threstrals. It all began long ago, just before the Great Blizz, or the Ice Age, to Muggles, Muggles and wizardkind lived amongst each other. Some very powerful wizards tamed Threstrals as a means of flight. This was before any written documentation was published, so the fact that Threstrals existed was lost for a long time...
The first documented discovery of a Threstral was around 1400 CE. This is when the Peverell brothers made the three Deathly Hallows. In "The Tales of Beedle the Bard", the 'Tale of the Three Brothers' says that Death gave the brothers one Hallow each. This has been proven false, and evidence suggests that the Peverells made the Hallows themselves. The eldest Peverell brother made the most powerful wand in the world; the Elder wand. He experimented with many wand cores and found a new creature. It was a Threstral, so he politely asked for one of its hairs. The Threstral hair made it so that only those not afraid of death. This is one of the reasons for Tom Riddle's, or Lord Voldemort, downfall. But, on 1998, Harry Potter snapped the Elder Wand, ensuring that no one like Voldemort would ever lay hands on it again.
When the Black Plague came, around ⅓ of England died. This caused many Muggles to see Threstrals, and this lead to the Threstral becoming a sign of bad luck and evil sorcery. This superstition lead to anyone being near or discussing Threstrals, or Birdhorses of Doom as Muggles call them, being hanged or burned.
A notable Threstral enthusiast is Luna Scamander neé Lovegood. She is working to debunk the myth that Threstrals are bad luck. She also discovered that Threstrals like jazz, that they love cow meat, and she keeps one of the largest Threstral sanctuaries in the UK.
