What Does a Threstral Eat?
Chapter 3
As those who pay attention in their CoMC classes will know, there is a rating scale made by the Ministry of Magic that tells how dangerous a beast is. For example, the lowest rating is one "X", which means that the creature is boring. However, the highest rating is "XXXXX", which means that the creature is violent and is a known wizard killer.
In the case of the Threstral, it is not the behavior that gives it a rating of "XXXX" It is the Threstral's eating habits. The diet consists of primarily meat and blood. The Threstral's nose can sniff blood over a long distance, similar to a mundane shark. It is not unheard of that they will eat herbs, but they will only do this on rare occasion.
As I said earlier, a Threstral is a very intelligent beast. It has the ability to sense if a plant is either naturally poisonous or even poisoned by outside forces. For example, a Threstral will never eat poison ivy, even on the brink of death.
If you keep on of these creatures, the best meat to feed it is the bloody meat of a cow. This is why Threstral keeping is not for the faint-hearted.
Another part of the Threstral's diet is the milk. Like the Threstral itself, the milk is a dark shade of grey. Only young ones drink the milk, because it gives them the strength it needs to develop their wings. I would not recommend drinking the milk, due to its very bitter taste, or at least to humans. Many magizoologists agree that, to Threstrals, the milk tastes like honey.
