Thestrals
Chapter 9
A thestral is a breed of winged horses. They have a skeletal body, a face with reptilian features and a bat’s wings.
They can only be seen by people who has seen someone die at least once.
Wild thestrals are very dangerous and hate humans, but tamed thestrals can be very nice and kind. Some of them are also very shy. Tamed ones are very gentle, and might even let you ride them.
They are very social, and even though they can’t speak, they understand every word you say. So insulting one is pretty bad.
Thestrals are very attracted to the smell of fresh meat or blood. They eat raw meat, and they also like catching bats just like the hippogriff. Thestrals also eat owls, and if they are kept at schools, or places where owls usually fly it’s very common that owls go missing (aka they get eaten by thestrals).
If you’re nice to a thestral, they’ll be very loyal to you. But just one insulting word and their trust for you is gone forever. If they fear you, and you still try to approach them too fast they’ll kill you, and if they feel like you’re threatening them they’ll also kill you.
They are very difficult creatures to be around, since you never know if they fear you, cause they don’t really show it.
