In the past Helmway Castle was loud and cheerful 24/7. There were always games being held there. One of these was a duel between people with magic. This was held once a year when the two best Mages (as they were called at the time) duelled each other for the sake of celebrating the winner. Merlin himself competed in this Barbaric game although he was the last to duel. The more common of games was beast vs beast. They would put two beasts owned by two different people and throw them in the ring together. only one came out. The winner would get money and quickly leave the city.

These games stopped when the castle fell silent. It was usually trashed and lights were always on. People in the streets screaming and chanting. "It was like a never ending party" says Jeffery Terrick "If you needed a quick getaway from the authorities or just a place to unwind you always ended up there." The crowded streets made it easy to loose yourself in.

The endless betting made some people go home rich and others walk away with empty pockets. It was also a city of thieves among other things. Travellers were warned at the gate to keep an eye on their belongings. Even though they had this warning many people would forget it and walk away with all of their things taken from under their nose.  

All in all the Castle was always full of light and bustling with noise and chaos.
