Palestrina formerly Praeneste
Palestrina is a modern city located 35 kilometres East of Italias capital city, Rome on a spur of the Apennines mountains ranges. The name comes from the word Praenesteus, referring to its overlooking location.
It is built upon the ruins of an ancient city that translates as, Sanctuary of Goddess Fortuna.
The city was a major cultic centre for the worship of the goddess FortunaPrimigenia.
Her sanctuary and temple oracle were surrounded by an immense complex of buildings rising up the hillside like a pyramid of terraces, exedras and porticos connected by staircases visible even from the sea. Comprised of an upper complex that is built into a hillside and terraced with ramps and stairs and a lower complex. The entire compound is intricately woven together to manipulate the visitor’s experience of sight, daylight and the approach to the sanctuary itself.
The Forum of Praeneste were comprised of buildings which formed the Central temple; whose walls became the cathedral, and a two storey civil Basilica consisting of four naves separated by columns. The Basilica was flanked by two buildings, the easternmost containing a raised podium [suggestus] and the public treasury [aerarium].
The Cavern of Fortunes, is a cave in a grotto which is a sacred area of the temple itself, where the Praenestian lpts or oracles of the Goddess Fortune were discovered later.
