Many people wonder why Harry could only see the thestrals from Cedric's death because he saw his mum die right before his eyes.
The reason is that Harry didn't really SEE his my die he only saw her when she was dead. In description when voldemort went to kill lily she covered Harry's eye and covered him so In long term affect Harry didn't really see his mum die therefore he couldn't see the thestrals untill Cedric died.
One can only thestrals when they have WITNESSED death.
