Chapter 2
Things to remember: “BP” stands for Before Present, “BCE” stands for Before Common Era and “CE” stands for Common Era.
The Stone Age is the period in which the Homo species discovered how to create and use stone tools in order to survive and thrive. The Stone Age is divided into three different subsystems: Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic.
The major key findings made by Homo species in this period: the discovery on how to use fire to warm, cook and light, the discovery of the use of animal skins to cover the body and protect themselves from the adverse weather conditions, the abandonment of the nomadic practice, and the use of tools made of stone.
They didn't have a language in this time period, it was all just moaning and groaning.
The Bronze Age is the period in which the humans started developing tools made of brass. It may sound small to you, but the discovery of brass really meant a step forward in human evolution. For instance, materials made of brass were far more resistant and essential for wars and battles but were also an upgrade in materials used for daily life, like utensils and work tools. In fact, markets, trading, and commerce had their first start during this period.
The Iron Age is the period in which humans started to use tools made of iron. Iron was better than brass to make tools and weapons because it was harder and tough.
Angélique de Beauffort, a renowned magical Historian and writer with Belgian nobility origins, presented in 1973, one of the most outstanding written works about Ghouls, Approfondir Les Origines (transl. Deepen Origins).
Homo habilis
H. habilis (which can be translated into “handyman” or “able man”) was the first hominid of the Homo genus. H. habilis lived about two million years to 1.5 million years ago on the African continent. This species manufactured simple stone tools and built huts. There is no sign of magical understanding.
Homo erectus
H. erectus, meaning “upright man”, lived about 1.9 million years to 70,000 years ago in geographic areas such as Africa and Eurasia (China, Indonesia, Sri Lanka). Beauffort considered H. erectus an autonomous species. This was the first Homo species to use fire to cook and also the first species who made handaxes out of stone. Some authors believe H. erectus was the first Homo species to show understanding of magic.
Homo gautengensis
To Beauffort, H. gautengensis were descendants of the H. habilis. They are thought to have lived about 1.9 million years to 1.1 million years ago in the southern African continent. There is no sign of magical understanding.
Homo ergaster
Homo ergaster (meaning "working man") was the descendant or collateral of H. erectus, as Beauffort portrays them and lived in eastern and southern Africa about 1.9 million to 1.4 million years ago. According to Beauffort, H. ergaster was deprived of magical powers. In fact, Beauffort believes that H. ergaster and H. erectus common existence were in all ways similar to Muggles and modern day wizards and witches. They coexisted peacefully, even though H. ergaster did not have magical powers. Obviously, note that we are not speaking about magic as we know today, we are referring to the beginnings of magic (even though we are still not sure about what it exactly means). Beauffort also points out that H. ergaster is surely to be the ancestors of giants.
Homo antecessor
Homo antecessor species is an extinct human species that dates back from 800,000 to 1.2 million years ago and it is believed that they were the first human species to appear in Europe. Although controversial, Beauffort believes that the Homo antecessor is an autonomous human species that preceded the Homo Heidelbergensis. In fact, ogres are a devolution of the Homo antecessor because they degenerated some of their primary features.
Homo cepranensis
Beauffort considers H. cepranensis as the first Squibs in history. As descendants or collaterals of H. erectus and H. ergaster, she believes they were the result of descendancy with no magical powers, probably due to interbreeding between H. erectus and H. ergaster. Beauffort also admits that H. cepranensis was possibly an ancestor of H. heidelbergensis, explaining why H. heidelbergensis - a Homo species who showed no signs of mastering magic - could branch off to create the first exclusively Homo species to own and control magic.
Homo heidelbergensis
H. heidelbergensis lived in Africa, Europe, and western Asia between 600.000 and 200.000 years ago. Beauffort considered that H. heidelbergensis branched off to create H. neanderthalensis, H. gul akeer, and H. sapiens. More recent discoveries include Denisova hominid in this group as well. Originally from Africa, they migrated to Europe between 300.000 and 400.000 years ago. H. heidelbergensis did not have any kind of magical power, at least that we know of. However, research showed us that they had the cult of the dead, meaning they were the first Homo species to bury their dead, to hunt and they certainly had a pre-linguistic system of communication.
Homo neanderthalensis
H. neanderthalensis or simply, Neanderthals, lived in Europe and western Asia between 350.000 years to 40.000 years ago. Neanderthals coexisted with H. sapiens and H. gul akeer. They had a linguistic system and lived in complex social groups. They were very good hunters and owners of advanced hunting knowledge and hunting tools. However, there isn’t any evidence to sustain they had interaction with magic of any sort. Despite the lack of magical, some scholars sustain the idea that the interbreeding between Neanderthals and Denisovans, caused the appearance of the Troglodytarum genus which, centuries later, would evolve into trolls.
Homo gul akeer
H. gul akeer are descendants of H. heidelbergensis. They coexisted with both Neanderthals and H. sapiens. H. gul akeer was the first and only species to be completely and exclusively composed by elements with magical powers (similar to how we understand magic nowadays). Beauffort advocated that Ghouls have evolved from a common ancestor to humans, dating back to approximately 200,000 years ago. Beauffort’s studies and theories have not yet been contradicted, and the most recent evidence keeps pointing us in the same direction, which means, that more solid arguments are strengthening the fact that Ghouls are indeed Homo gul akeer descendants.
Homo rhodesiensis
H. rhodesiensis lived about 300,000 to 125,000 years ago in the region of Africa. There’s still little information about their evolution. However, it is thought that this particular Homo species had a powerful bond with magic. Beauffort goes further, as she believes and sustains her point of view with very strong facts that Yumboes (also known as the African house-elf) and therefore, house-elves, find their progeny in H. rhodesiensis.
Homo Sapiens
H. sapiens means “the wise man” and are now called modern humans. The species to which we all belong to… well, to be precise, we belong to the subspecies H. sapiens, which means we are twice wisest than our ancestors! Undoubtedly, this was the species who thrived and became the most influential species on the planet. H. sapiens do have bonds to magical powers.
Denisova hominin
Denisova hominin or Denisovans lived around 125.000 years ago in the Siberian and Eurasia region. Unlike Neanderthals (with whom Denisovans inhabited and interbreed), who showed no magical signs at all, there are some questions surrounding the magical understanding by Denisovans. Certainly not very gifted, Denisovans are believed to have had some magical understatement - limited, but still noteworthy. Research is still developing; however, some authors brought forward the possibility that hags’ progeny comes from Denisovans.
Homo floresiensis
H. floresiensis, widely known as “hobbit,” was a Homo species who lived about 190.000 to 50.000 years ago. These Homo species were always buried with metal tools (war and hunting tools), presumably made by themselves or by which they became known. Even though extinct, this species branched off to create the humanoid creature we nowadays call goblin.
