Acromantula

Chapter 4

Also known as the colossal spiders who have taken residence in the Forbidden Forest, with their gargantuan, hair covered, carthorse sized bodies, thick, strong, scuttling legs, and eight black, eyes, these spiders have definitely earned their spot in this book.

Hatched out of a large, soft eggs, Acromantula appear just like enormous spiders; their limbs can grow up to fifteen feet tall. They are covered in thick, black hair, and though most have black eyes, though blind ones; such as Aragog, Hagrid's pet, have milky white eyes.

Although by many people the venom of the Acromantula would be considered just another way to  murder, the venom of the Acromantula is very valuable in the wizarding world; just a pint of the liquid costs about 100 galleons!

While a part of the Forbidden Forest at Hogwarts is infested with Acromantula, these giant spiders do not originate from here. Usually Acromantula inhabit large, thick jungles in South-East Asia.

The colony of giant arachnids in the Forest originate from Aragog, who came from an egg that Hagrid traded for and raised in a cupboard in Hogwarts itself, and Mosag, the wife that Hagrid found for Aragog.

Though the spiders did not harm Hagrid, Acromantula have a taste for human flesh and would eat you if you came near it if they got half the chance. As for raising one in a cupboard in your school, well... Let's just hope only Hagrid has such a love for horrible, hairy monsters!
