Basilisks
Chapter 3
The famed monster hidden in the Chamber of Secrets, with it's long, sharp fangs, murderous gaze, and vicious nature, the Basilisk, also called the King of Serpents, is one of the most frightening and dangerous creatures of our world.
Though it is hatched from a tiny chicken's egg beneath a toad, the Basilisk can grow vast and terrifying long. As if such size is not intimidating enough, the Basilisk has also long, poisonous fangs that if embedded in your body could kill you in mere minutes. But this is not the worst.
Along with it's traits that you can see easily enough, the Basilisk has a murderous glare. Any creature who looks it in the eye suffers instant death, and their body could well be feasted on by the beast.
Nevertheless, if you do not look the Basilisk straight in the eye, for example reflected in a puddle or mirror, or through a camera, the victim will only be Petrified, which means that they will appear dead, though their body will be stiff; completely frozen.
The only remedy for a Petrified person is to drink a potion created from the Mandrake root, an in itself dangerous plant that is bred in the Hogwarts green-houses.
The only people who can control a Basilisk are Parslemouths, people who can talk to snakes. However, this can depend on the relationship between the serpent and the human. For example, in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Tom Riddle is able to control the King of Serpents when Harry Potter, who is also a Parslemouth, could not.
Although this creature may seem invincible, the crowing of a rooster is fatal to it. It is also possible to kill it with a knife or sword, etc. but it can be hard to pierce it properly.
Spiders are its mortal enemies, so if you see spiders scuttling away as fast as they can from your house, you might want to ask yourself some questions!
