Runes and Radius
Chapter 6
In Ancient Runes Professor Bathsheda is the first to speak.
"Now, we all know the animal runes, and what their numbers are. But, I would like us to dig deeper and discover what these runes might represent and how they affected the life of Witches and Wizards before us. You may each choose one of the numbered runes from 1-9 and define that animal, what it may have meant for the ancient Witches and Wizards, and why it is represented by that number. A three foot long essay with a drawing of the rune, it's number, and a drawing of the actual animal itself. For now, I would like each of you to take a piece of parchment, and write all the numbered runes in order, what their animal is, a drawing, and why that animal is that number. You can use this as notes for your essay. Chop, chop, get a move on. I pull out a piece of parchment and begin to write.
0 - Demiguise - The Demiguise's ability of Invisibility is what makes it 0. A Demiguise's fur causes it to become invisible. The zero represents the invisibility because while invisible, one can see "zero". Demiguise gur is often used for invisibility cloaks.
1 - Unicorn - The one horn on a Unicorn makes this creature represent 1. Te unicorn is a powerful magical creature that appears as a horse with a single horn. Uni = Prefix for One
2 - Graphorn - The dual horns of a Graphorn represent 2. Graphhorns have two horns and the horns are used in many potions.
3 - Runespoor - The Runespoor has three heads and this is what represents the number 3. The left head is used as a planner. The middle head is the dreamer. The right head is the critic and is often bitten off by the other two heads due to over-criticism.
4 - Fwooper - The Fwooper is a magical bird with a spectacular tail. The 4 represents the four colors on the Fwooper feathers.
5 - Quintaped - The Quintaped is a dangerous creature with thick hairy fur and five legs. The number 5 represents the five legs of a Quintaped.
6 - Salamander - The salamander is a lizard - like creature that lives in flames among fire. The 6 represents the number of hours that a salamander can survive out of fire. The 6 also represent the number of legs most creatures have.
7 - Unknown - The Unknown is an underwater creature that has never been seen or titled. It's presence is very mysterious and this is why it is associated with the number 7. Seven is a magically powerful number and is still shrouded in Mysteries.
8 - Acromantula - The Acromantula is a large spider that commonly eats the flesh of humans and are native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. An Acromantula has eight legs and this is why it represents the number 8.
9 - Hydra - A Hydra is a serpent-like beast with nine heads. Its nine heads are what represent the number 9.
When I finish writing, the class period is done. Maya and I walk to Arithmancy and depart with Peter who goes to Muggle Studies. As always, the class is a sign of hard work. The Blackboards are covered in numbers and what they could mean. Professor Vector is standing as rigid as always. Her satin robes are draping down to the ground. I walk towards her and hand in my number chart.
"Hmm very good, the x axis could have been a bit longer than that, but very good. You seem to have done better than the rest of the class." Maya blushes and gives her chart to Professor Vector who immediately says
"My dear girl, why ever would you put the 7 there, the number 7 is immensely powerful and must be honored so. Yes, right there would have done well." Maya was blushing furiously. Even if she was very good at Arithmancy, it was a very hard subject and Professor Vector was extremely strict, so much so that many of the students had quit. Usually Maya, being a Hufflepuff would have said sorry. But, she had learned in her third year, that when she did Professor Vector had snapped not to be sorry but to do it better. Then, Professor Vector said,
"It is very good you know, and the number 7 is still very mysterious. So, take your seats." Maya and I did not need reminding twice. We took our front seats and began to take notes.
"A Radius" Professor Vector explained "is the distance between the center and outer edge of a circle. Let me show you" She pulled out her wand and erased the chalkboard. Then she drew a circle and found it's center and drew a line to the edge. "Can anyone tell me what a diameter is?" I raised my hand as did most of the class. Professor Vector called on a Gryffindor Boy that had his hand raised. "What is a Diameter?" She asked him again. He replied,
"A Diameter is the straight line that passes through a figure, particularly a circle or sphere." She nodded, but did not say anything to him. Then she asked, "What is the relationship between a diameter and a radius? And, does a radius have to be of a circle?" I raised my hand and she called on me,
"A Radius is half of a diameter. This works seeing as the radius is from the center to the edge and the diameter passes through the center and to the edge. Both a Diameter and a Radius can be place at any angle on a circle. A Radius does not have to be of a circle and one can calculate the radius of a figure or polygon." I say. She nods solemnly then says
"I would like you to draw a chart of a radius and diameter and solve for them with the area of the circle being 74.66. Then underneath, write a brief statement on what the circle, a radius, or a diameter might represent. Go on, off to your next class." And with that, we were off to Transfiguration.
