The bad beginning part 1
Chapter 1
Our story starts when we take a trolley to Briny Beach. "Briny Beach please." I called into a intercom. Me and my siblings stepped off the trolly somebody stopped us from walking away it was the trolly driver. "Children aren't you going to the festival of fun fairs with rides and games and snacks festive means fun." The trolly driver said. "We know what festive means Klaus said." "Its a perfect day to go to the Beach." I said. "But its rainy and cloudy." "That's what makes it so perfect." I said. On hot and sunny days it was hard to find a place to lay me and my siblings blanket but on rainy and cloudy days we had the beach more or less to ourselves. I was at this time 14 and I had a knack for inventing strange devices this particular morning I was thing of a invention to retrieve a stone from the water.
Klaus my brother was a reader and had read almost every book in our library he was a little older than 12 and wore glasses which made him look intelligent he was intelligent.
And Sunny the youngest of us was very small a little smaller than a boot that she made up for with the size and sharpness of her four teeth.
I gave Klaus the rock I was holding and he gave the rock to Sunny. Sunny bit the rock until it was smooth. Sunny gave it back to Klaus who gave it to me.
"Thanks Sunny." I said.
I threw the rock into the water and retrieved it with my invention.
"I can't believe it worked." I said. "I didn't expect other wise." Klaus said.
"Gack." Sunny said pointing to a figure imerging from the fog.
"Its Mr. Poe." I said.
"From the bank what is he doing here?" Klaus asked.
When Mr. Poe got to us he had a fit of coughs like he always did when he came over to our house for dinner parties one thing we liked about our parents is that they didn't send us away when they had dinner parties but let us join them Mr. Poe excused himself from the table to often have a fit of coughs before rejoining.
"How do you do Mr. Poe?" I said
"How do you do?" Klaus said.
"Oyo do." Sunny said.
"Fine thank you." Mr. Poe said.
"Its a nice day." I said.
"Yes it is a I'm afraid I have some very bad news for you children you're parents have perished in a terrible fire I'm very sorry to tell you this my dears." Mr. Poe said.
I dropped the stone I was holding.
"Perished means killed but the fire department didn't arrive in time the whole house was burned down." Mr. Poe said.
"We know what perished means." Klaus said.
"Ok." Mr. Poe said.
Mr. Poe led us away from me and my siblings old life that day our first stop was the ruins of our home.
"Its all gone." I say.
"I'm sure of how you must feel Baudelaires but I assure you have nothing."
"We have nothing." Klaus said.
"To worry about." Mr. Poe said.
"Wha do." Sunny said which meant something along the lines of what's that?
Klaus saw it and picked it up.
Mr. Poe brought us to his car.
"Say goodbye Baudelaires." Mr. Poe said.
"Bye." I said. Then I turned around and me and my siblings left our previous lives.
"Until we found you a suitable guardian you'll stay with my family I'm sure you'll become fast friends with Edgar and Albert." Mr. Poe said.
The rest of our car ride was silent.
It was dinner time when we arrived at the Poes house.
"Its a raven." One of Poes sons said.
"Its a crow." The other one said."
"Its chicken and we have blanched potatoes." Mrs. Poe said.
"What does blanched mean." One of the brothers said.
"It means boiled." Klaus said.
"Nobody asked you." One of the brothers said.
"Now son." Mr. Poe said.
"Edgars right honey nobody asked the Baudelaires.
"May we go to our rooms." I said.
Mr. Poe coughed. "Rooms." Mr. Poe said.
They took us to our room me and my siblings slept on one bed together.
"Good night Edgar." Mrs. Poe said.
"Good night Albert." Mr. Poe said.
"Goodnight Albert." Mrs. Poe said.
"Goodnight Edgar." Mr. Poe said.
"And good night guess I bet you miss you feel terrible and miss you're parents very much." Mrs. Poe said.
"We do." I said.
"Do what?" Mrs. Poe said.
"We feel terrible and miss our parents very much." Klaus said.
"That's gonna make a wonderful headline." Mrs Poe said.
"How did you do it?" Albert asked.
"Do what?" I said.
"Start the fire." Edgar said.
Then me and Klaus layed down.
The next morning Mr. Poe took us to his car we all got in and Mr. Poe drove off.
"I know you children must be nervous about living with a guardian but you're nervousness will turn to excitement when you meet this man his name is Count Olaf." Mr. Poe said.
"Count Olaf we've never heard of him." Klaus said.
"He is a actor too so you know his excitement is gunine." Mr. Poe said.
"I thought he was a Count." Klaus said.
"He's both a actor and a Count." Mr. Poe said.
"Mr. Poe if he lived so close by why didn't our parents ever invite him over?" I asked.
"Possibly because he was very busy as a banker I'm very busy myself." Mr. Poe said.
Then we arrived in the neighborhood. We walked in front of a big house. A women comes out of the house.
"Hello shello you must be the Baudelaire children I'm Justice Strauss of the high court." Justice Strauss said.
"Hi I'm Violet and these are my siblings Klaus and Sunny." I said.
"I was gonna make salmoni chu and I bought this bread but I forgot to buy a bread knife and its really unforunate because I was gonna take the bread and cut it up into bit sides pieces." Justice Strauss said.
"My sister and I would be glad to help my sister is very mechanically minded and I'm very adapt to library since."
"A." Sunny said.
"What my sister means to say her teeth are perfect for slicing bread." I said.
"Oh how lucky am I to have such unusual children in my life." Justice Strauss said.
"Are you Count Olaf's wife?" Klaus asked.
"Oh no goodness me no I don't even know him that well you see he's my neighbor his house is over there." Justice Strauss pointed to a house that was so dirty.
Then Mr. Poe led me and my siblings to the house and rang the doorbell.
The door didn't open.
"That's strange he said he was waiting eagerly to get his hands on you." Mr. Poe said.
Me and my siblings looked at each other.
Mr. Poe rang the doorbell again.
The next thing we heard was feet coming down some stairs fast.
Then we heard "hello hello hello." Coming from inside the house.
Then the door creaked open. "Hello hello hello children my name is Count Olaf well come in come in and make sure to wipe you're feet on the map so you won't track in any mud." Count Olaf said.
"And whose the man with the hat?" Count Olaf said.
"I'm Author Poe from malcutuary money mangent." Mr. Poe said.
"Money sounds familiar." Count Olaf said.
"You're house needs a little cleaning." Mr. Poe said.
"Well I know its not as fancy as the Baudelaire mansion but children perhaps with a bit of you're money we can fix it up a little." Count Olaf said.
"No Count Olaf the Baudelaire fortune is not to be used until Violet comes of age." Mr. Poe said.
"Which ones Violet?" Count Olaf asked.
"The eldest." Mr. Poe said.
"Well do I need to sign anything?" Count Olaf asked.
"No." Mr. Poe said.
"Then as we say in the theater exit stage right." Count Olaf said.
"Goodbye Violet goodbye Klaus goodbye Sunny and remember if you have any questions you can always contact me at the bank." Mr. Poe said as he was being pushed out the door by Count Olaf.
Me and my siblings looked around his house.
"Well Baudelaires aren't you gonna say how do you do to you're new guardian." Count Olaf said.
"How do you do?" I said.
"Better and better Baudelaires better and better. Count Olaf said.
Count Olaf pulled out a long list.
"Do you know what this is?" Count Olaf asked us.
"It looks like a list." I said.
"Wrong its a list a list of chores rich kids like you are probably spoiled and haven't done a chore in you're life." Count Olaf said.
He gave us a tour telling us what to do in each room then he took us to me and my siblings room it only had one bed in it.
"And orphans this is you're room out of all the rooms in this house I chose this one for you're safety and comfort." Count Olaf said.
"There's only one bed." I said.
"Well as you can see I have offered you this no cost to you this compliary pile of rocks." Count Olaf said.
Me and my siblings looked over at the rocks.
"Thoughts." Count Olaf said.
"Thoughts first of all." Klaus said.
"First of all first impressions are often wrong." I said.
"True like you're first impression of me is that I'm a terrible person but in time Baudelaires you'll find you haven't the faintest idea." Count Olaf said.
Count Olaf leaves and me and my siblings sit on the bed.
"Don't worry Sunny he's gone." I said.
"He is a terrible man." Klaus said.
"Klaus haven't you read a book about people who make homes in difficult places." I said.
