The Science Of Magic
Chapter 2
Magic and science often coincide in both the muggle and wizarding worlds, and this is certainly applicable to the Hellenistic period, a time where magic was not only accepted but openly practised. Magic was found in most aspects of science, aiding most prominently in Astronomy and Medicine.
Astronomy
The Hellenistic era was a period of great discovery in Astronomy, and has been called the 'jewel in the crown' of Greek science. In the 4th century BC it was discovered that the heavens could be and mapped in terms of geometry. This meant that eastern wizards and witches began using the mapping of stars to make predictions, leading to a great 'astrology craze' in the Hellenistic period. It was also during this time that the spiritual significance of the equinox was discovered, as a wobble in the earths axis was discovered to take place, marking the beginning of a new spiritual age.
Medicine
Medicine in the Hellenistic period was revolutionary. In Egypt the first human dissections were permitted on the cadavers of criminals, leading to a greater understanding of human anatomy, and the increased immigration in Hellenistic cities meant that ideas from Egypt, Greece, and Persia spread into each other, and physicians were able to take the most innovative and effective ideas from three civilisations. However despite the advancements in non-magical medicine, the popularity of magical healers and protective amulets, spells and rituals only grew in Hellenistic society. Potions and incantations were used mostly for everyday medicine such as contraceptives and cures for common ailments.
