Students should have a conceptual understatement of the fundamental theory of charms; every charm, in some way, shape, or form, has a counter-charm. Students should also know the types of counter-charms, and how effective the are at countering a charm.
[Essential Question]
*How can Witches/Wizards efficiently repel or revert a desired charm and stop or hinder their effects?
|General Answer|
Wizards and witches may use counter-charms that have been created over the years to counteract specific charms they were designed to counter. Although, some counter-charms are more effective than others, thus we have classified many by different types negation, inverse, partial inverse, counter-effective, and preventative.
Main Generalizations:
*NEGATION charms are counter-charms that were designed and created in order to only be able to completely counteract another type of charm and have no effect outside that matter.
*INVERSE counter-charms are two charms that have OPPOSITE effects; therefore, these charms are able to counteract the other's effects COMPLETELY. They differ from negation charms because they can be casted in situations other than to counteract a charm.
*PARTIAL INVERSE counter-charms are similar to inverse, but in the relationship of the two charms, only one charm is able to counter the other completely while the other cannot( one-way partial inverse) or the two charms do not fully counteract each other.
*PREVENTIVE counter-charms prevent a charm from taking effect on a given object, or stop a charm before it has been cast so it will return the object to its original state, partially or completely.
*COUNTER-EFFECTIVE is the catch-all category meant to cover any kind of counter-charming scenario that doesn’t fit into the other categories. These counter-charms are two spells that are non-opposite(meaning that the two charms are intended to be opposites) and one or both can fully or partially stop the effects of one or each other.

{NEGATION}
***Negation counter-charms serve no other purpose than to negate a specific charm(s).***
-Whistling Wand Charm-
Incantation: Edo Sonum (EH-doh SO-num)
Wand Movement: Single clockwise loop.
Willpower: Low; determines the pitch of the resulting sound.
Concentration: Low.
-Silent Wand Charm-
Incantation: Pax (PAHKS)
Wand Movement: Swift (fast) flick.
Willpower: None.
Concentration: None.
{INVERSE}
(1) The two charms in question can each be used independently of one another.
(2) Their effects directly oppose one another.
(3) If the two charms are cast on the same object with the correct mental spellcasting components (usually willpower), the object will revert back to its original state regardless of which was cast first or whether they were cast at the same time.
***If the first criterion is not met, you have a negation charm (which cannot be used independently of the original charm). If the second is not met, you have counter-effective charms (whose effects do not directly oppose each other, but instead counter one another circumstantially). If the third is not met and they only partially undo each other, you’re left with a partial inverse charm (if the charms have opposite effects) or a counter-effective charm (if they do not have opposite effects.***
-Amplifying Charm-
Incantation: Sonorus (soh-NOHR-us)
Wand Movement: Point wand toward target.
Willpower: Moderate; determines volume of resulting sound.
Concentration: Low; on booming voices or loud sounds. Target the thing whose sound will be amplified.
-Quietening Charm-
Incantation: Quietus (KWIY-uh-tus)
Wand Movement: Point wand toward target.
Willpower: Moderate; determines volume of resulting sound (more willpower results in quieter sound).
Concentration: Low; on quiet sounds or silence. Target the thing whose sound is to be quieted.
{PARTIAL-INVERSE}
*** The Banishing Charm cannot move objects around corners and is very hard to use when the object is out of eyesight. Thus, the Banishing Charm can be fully undone by the Summoning Charm. However, it can only partially undo the Summoning Charm since in some cases you can summon objects from places the Banishing Charm cannot return them to, making the relationship between the two that of one-way inverse charms. ***
-Summoning Charm-
Incantation: Accio [target name] (AK-key-oh)
Wand Movement: Half-circle starting upward from the right and ending on the left.
Willpower: Medium.
Concentration: Low to high; depends on the proximity of the object. Continue concentrating on the object. Visualize the object you wish to summon. The more specific, the better.
-Banishing Charm-
Incantation: Depulso (deh-PUHL-so)
Wand Movement: Sweep of wand.
Willpower: Medium.
Concentration: Low to high; depends on the proximity of the object. Concentrate on the target object.
{PREVENTIVE}
*** The key difference between preventive counter-charms and ordinary counter-charms is in casting the counter-charm before the other charm is cast. ***
***The anti-theft charm prevents anyone from summoning the charmed object by anyone but the object's owner.***
-Summoning Charm-
Incantation: Accio [target name] (AK-key-oh)
Wand Movement: Half-circle starting upward from the right and ending on the left.
Willpower: Medium.
Concentration: Low to high; depends on the proximity of the object. Continue concentrating on the object. Visualize the object you wish to summon. The more specific, the better.
-Anti-Theft Charm-
Incantation: Prohibere Accio (PRO-he-bear-ray AK-key-oh)
Wand Movement: Tap on target
Willpower: None.
Concentration: None
{COUNTER-EFFECTIVE}
*** One of the main uses of the softening charm is to make one's feet bouncy and increase the rate of travel. The stickfast hex, a charm that sticks one's shoes to the floor, can hinder the effects and alter the usage of the softening charm and vice versa. However, the charms have separate effects and, on the off chance, counter one another. ***
-Softening Charm-
Incantation: Spongify (SPUHN-jee-fye)
Wand Movement: A "S" like motion starting from the top downwards.
Willpower: High; will determine the bouncy of the target and the duration.
Concentration: Low
-Stickfast Hex-
Incantation: Colloshoo (CALL-oh-shoe)
Wand Movement: Flick downwards followed by a swipe to the right and curve upwards.
Willpower: Low
Concentration: Medium; focus on the targets shoes.
