Dark Charms

Chapter 2
Keywords: Jinx, Hex, Curse;

{-Standard-}
Students are expected to have a basic understatement of what dark charms are, how they differ from other types of charms, and how they are sorted within the three classifications.

[Essential Questions]
*What are Dark Charms? How are they classified? What effects do they impose?

|General Answer|
We distinguish a charm the title "dark" due to it's malevolent intentions of the caster. Dark charms are classified based on the severity of their imposed effects. Dark charms can produce a multitude of effects. Usually they intend on disfiguring and hindering the desired target.

Main Generalizations:

*DARK CHARMS are spells that add certain properties to an object or creature, but have connotations of dark magic.

*A CURSE is a tool of the Dark Arts and the worst kind of Dark Magic. Curses are used with the intention of causing harm, control, or even death to the victim.

*A JINX is a spell affiliated with dark magic and distinguished by their negative effects used mostly for the amusement of observers and the minor discomfort of the victim.

*A HEX is a spell affiliated with Dark Magic, darker than a jinx but not as dark as a curse, and generally causes moderate suffering to the victim.

-Objectives- Students should be able to . . .

+ Understand the effects of various dark charms.
+ What the spell casting components of those charms are.
+ Understanding the ethics behind them.
+Be able to classify them accordingly.

The Dark Arts Taken Apart
Prepared by, Professor Powers

GOAL: Explain various dark charms, their components, and how they compare to each other.

{Dark Arts}: Refers to any type of magic that is mainly used to cause harm, control, or even death to the victim.

-Dark Charms-: Are spells that add certain properties to an object or creature, but have connotations of Dark Arts.

*NOTE*: There are three types of Dark Charms, JINXES, HEXES, and CURSES. (see above for definitions)

|Comparison|: JINXES are usually spells whose effects are irritating but amusing. HEXES are considered slightly worse than jinxes, but are still only dark magic of a minor sort. CURSES are usually the worst kinds of dark magic.

[NOTABLE JINXES, HEXES, AND CURSES]

-The Jelly-Legs Jinx-
Incantation: Locomotor Wibbly (LOH-cah-MOH-tor WIH-blee)
Wand Movement: A rapid squiggle motion starting on the left, going up, curving to the right and then down.
Willpower: Low to High (dependent on intended duration)
Concentration: The target’s legs becoming jelly underneath them

Explanation: When the Jelly-Legs Jinx is successfully cast, your opponent’s legs will begin to jiggle uncontrollably. If you have properly applied all of these components, you will see an orange light shoot out of your wand towards your target.

-The Knockback Jinx-
Incantation: Flipendo (fli-PEN-doh)
Wand Movement: A downward diagonal to the right, followed by an upward diagonal movement to the right and ending with a swish
Willpower: Low to moderate
Concentration: Low

Explanation: Pushes a target backwards when cast properly. If cast correctly, a blue light will shoot out of your wand towards the target. The target will feel as if they have been punched in the chest and will be knocked backwards due to the impact.

-Engorgement Skull Hex-
Incantation: Engorgio Skullus (in-GORE-jee-oh SKULL-us)
Wand Movement: Point wand at targets head
Willpower: Depends, affects the duration of the spell upon the skull
Concentration: Depends on how large you want enlarge the skull

Explanation: Used to swell the skull and surrounding tissue of the victim.

-The Slug Vomiting Curse-
Incantation: Slugulus Eructo (slug-YOU-lus eh-RUCK-toe)
Wand Movement: Point wand towards target
Willpower: Low; Spell is heavily influenced by the target's willpower
Concentration; High; visualize an attack on your target and an intent to bring discomfort

Explanation: This spell causes the victim to burp up slugs and slime. They may also take on a sallow complexion as a side-effect. It is described as a green jet of light if done correctly.

-The Full Body-Bind Curse-
Incantation: Petrificus Totalus (peh-TRI-fif-cus toh-TAH-lus)
Wand Movement: ¾ of a circle, a swish to the right, ending with a downward flick
Willpower: Moderate
Concentration: Moderate, on locking your target’s entire body

Explanation: The spell will cause the target’s body to become completely immobile. Their arms will immediately shoot to their sides, their legs will lock together, and they will, for all purposes, become stiff as a board. If the spell works, no light will shoot out of your wand, but your target’s body will freeze and lock up which will likely cause them to fall either onto their back or their face.
