Unlocking Charms
Chapter 7
The unlocking charms are exactly what they sound like. These charms are used to discreetly unlock doors, windows, and objects. Miranda Goshawk said it best, “There are many ways to pass through locked doors in the magical world, where you wish to enter or depart discreetly, however, the Unlocking Charm is your best friend.”
Charm: ALOHOMORA (Al-loh-ho-mor-ah)
History: Also, known as the thief’s friend. Not much in known about who exactly invented this charm, other than is was created somewhere in Africa. It was brought to Britain and hence to the world in the 17th century by Eldon Elsrickle. He used it to terrorize London, stealing from homes of muggles and wizards alike, until Blagdon Blay invented that Anti-Alohomora Charm*.
Before this charm, the most popular unlocking spell was Portaberto which used to splinter a lock from a door; though known to occasionally leave a smoking hole where the key should have gone. Before that, Open Sesame was used which ripped doors from their hinges and tore them into firewood. All of these were more rudimentary and by far less subtle than Alohomora.
Effect: Unlocks doors, windows, and other locked objects.
Wand movements: While saying the incantation, wave your wand in a circle and once your wand is at the top of the circle, wave it straight down cutting the circle half, over the attended target.
Charm: Aberto (Uh-bare-toe)
History: No history other than this spell and Portaberto share a similar etymology, suggesting that the two door-opening spells may be related to each other.
Effects: Opens things that are locked.
Wand Movement: You must wave the tip of your wand a small circle over the lock.#

*The Anti-Alohomora Charm will be discussed in the next chapter.
# I guessed this from when Queenie Goldstein tried to use this spell to gain entry to Percival Graves office.
