The Great Hall
Chapter 14
While I sat in my desk in Potions class, I heard the students in the back talking. I tried to zone them out. I was looking at the chalkboard that had chalk stains from the day before, when we were going over Polyjuice components. Today, we were talking about the side-effects of Polyjuice.
"If the Potioneer is not careful, the potion can have several side effects. The end result is to give the person who drinks the potion the look of the person you are adding the hair ingredient from..."
A student in Hufflepuff chuckled over the silly concept of drinking a potion that had hair in it.
"If you are not careful, you can have your appearance altered into any sort of creature. It is best to stray away from this potion, and this is the reason that many Witches and Wizards do not use this. The side-effects are more severe than they are helpful."
I slouched in my desk, and waited for the class to be over.
"Now students. It seems that most of you did not understand the full concept of the love potion 'Amortentia'"
When the professor brought up the potion, I jumped up in my desk. I quickly pulled out a quill and a piece of parchment.
"The effects of the Potion do NOT last for awhile UNLESS they are administered continuously. You can't give off a sense of True Love with this potion. The victim of this potion, will be in a trance where you will be able to make them essentially 'fall for you'. However - the victim may have a strong will towards the potion. This can cause the person administering the potion, unable to get the preferred results."
I jumped out of my desk, and ran out of the classroom, forgetting we had a few minutes left of class. I made my way towards the stairs, and ran faster than I could imagine. I made my way to the Great Hall, and saw a few staff members standing there. They were just cleaning the Great Hall for dinner tonight. They had their wands pointed at the statues. But there was a stand next to the Headmasters that I didn't recognize.
I ran towards the Staircase forgetting about what I just saw. I made my way to the first floor, and ran into Headmaster Novellus. "Mr. Yerger. Where's the fire, where are you off too?" I stopped dead in my tracks, "I have to go to the dorm. I left my assignment in there, and my professor has instructed me to get it at once." I became so good at lying, I believed myself for a moment. Headmaster Novellus stared down at me. "Hm. Well you better slow down. We wouldn't want an accident...." I smiled and nodded. "Mr. Yerger" he said as I walked away. "I believe you have a free period next,.. If you could tell Professor James to come speak to me. He had an urgent message to tell me." I felt impatient, Why won't he shut up ... "Yes sir. I will as soon as I see him." I turned back around, and saw Headmaster Novellus walk down the stairs with his long cloak that was black and had all of the houses on the back.
I made my way to the second landing. And watched as the stairs were going. They never came my way. "Is this really how things are going to be?" I looked around, and I pulled my wand out. I pointed it at the stairs, and waved my wand at it. It started to move my way, but it only got within a few feet of me. I still couldn't reach. I stood at the front of a doorway, and ran and jumped. My foot slipped. I almost fell.
I ran up to the stairs, into the third floors doorway. I loved feeling the sun beam through the stained glass windows. The knight statues were always in place, but they moved when a Wizard would touch it. I never messed with them, it always freaked me out. I saw the door to the classroom, and I ran and opened it. "THE----" I stopped dead in my tracks. I forgot he was teaching a class for Third Years.
I turned completely red in the face as Theo was staring at me, and trying not to laugh, while the rest of the class was laughing. "Well. I... uh. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to..." The entire class started laughing. Most of the Third Years were easy going, so not much bothered them. It was good to see Theo laugh. He has always had a sense of disregard for laughter, I loved seeing his dimples on his face.
"I'm going to wait in your office.." I walked past all of the students, "Actually. I could use your assistance, Theo said." I turned back around as I was on the stairs leading to his office. "I guess I can help." I walked down the stairs and walked towards Theo. Being in front of people no longer bothered me. "Class. This is one of my best students. His name is John Yerger. He's a seventh year Gryffindor." The entire Gryffindor students started cheering. I smiled and waved. Instigating their cheering. "We know who he is, Professor James." I saw a little Slytherin boy in his seat. He had quite a bit of freckles on his face, and had an awkward presence with him. He wore his hair parted right in the middle. "He's the guy, who won the Dueling competition. And took down that dark witch." I looked at the boy, "Actua-" Theo cut me off, "Yes. You're right Victor. He is that Wizard. We're glad to have him at Hogwarts. And I am great-full to have him in my class."
"Alright. Now we are going to talk about the spell, 'Everte Statum' the effects of this spell are to throw a person backwards. I will demonstrate on Mr. Yerger." Theo glanced at me, and pulled his wand out, and cocked his head, "You ready?" I watched as Theo pointed the wand at me, "EVERTE STATUM." A flash of light pointed at me, "PROTEGO." I said. I watched as the spell bounced back, and knocked him into a bookshelf. He dusted off his pants, while the entire class was laughing. I couldn't help but laugh, as Theo was thrown back into his own dismay. "You were supposed to get thrown back! Not me!" I smiled, and said, "Well. Now the students know how to use Everte Statum, and Protego."
Theo turned to look at the class, and said, "See. This is why he's one of the best students." I smiled and edged my way towards the classroom. "I'm going to be in the office. I need to speak with you I said." The look on his face he was so worried, but I wanted to make it so he wasn't too worried. "But don't worry, it's good news" I said. That didn't help much, he still looked worried. He could tell I was worried too.
I walked into the office, and sat in his chair. It was so comfortable. It was leather, it was like sitting on a big blanket, that was wrapping itself around you. The door was still open. I still had my wand in my hand, and I waved it at the door, and watched it close.
I put my feet up on his desk, and started to lean back into his chair. I noticed a small piece of paper on the floor. It had writing on it.
"Dear Enric Bogul,
This is Professor Theo James from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
I am inquiring about your job, as a Dark Wizard catcher.
If you need any references, I would not mind sending you my Headmasters reference.
I will be pleased to meet with you at any time. This is of dire importance that I get this job."
I saw as there was another note laying next to it,
"Dear Professor Theo James,
Upon your interview you will be asked a series of questions. We have already gotten your Headmasters OWL,
we will discuss things later."
Was he hiding this from me?
I looked into the trashcan, and saw a letter in there,
"Dear Professor Theo James,
We are proud to accept you as part of the new faculty as a Dark Wizard catcher. The beginning of our training starts in June of this year. Please bring your wand, and comfortable clothes. We have arranged you a house, for you, and/or your family to stay in while you are training.
Sincerely,
Enric Bogul."
I heard the feet of a bunch of students running around the classroom. They were leaving. I heard Theo as he was walking up the stairs. And he opened the door, and I threw the letter into my back pocket. I stayed relaxed in the seat.
"So.. Professor James.." I laughed. "What's going on? Why did you come into my class like you were running from something." I looked at him up and down. "I came to tell you a few key ingredients about Madison..." I stood up and walked towards him. "Amortentia, has to be administered frequently. Or the effects will wear off." He looked at me, "I know. But how is that going to help?" I looked back at him. "Let me finish,... Amortentia does not go well with strong will. So if you are very resistant towards the person who brewed the potion, or if you are resistant to the potions effects, it will be faulty... So. Just in case anything happened..." He put his hand over my mouth, "Stop."
We glanced at each-other, and stopped talking for what seemed like ages. I put my hand on his wrist, and moved it down.
"Headmaster Novellus says that you wanted to speak to him, and that you tried to talk him earlier..." Theo looked around the room, and looked at the ground. "Yeah. I.. Have a job somewhere else." I felt a bunch of pressure on my chest fall off. He wasn't keeping secrets from me. He was waiting for the right time.
"I figured as much."
I sat back down on his chair, and put my hands on my head, as Theo paced around the room. "There's some people here." I said. "I know... There from the Ministry. They're going to talk to everyone tonight, and make sure we have certain safety protocols down. It's mandatory for everyone to go."
"Is the Ministry coming in on the attack?" I said, Theo nodded his head, and put crossed his arms. He tilted his head down, and said "I have to go talk to Headmaster before tonight, or it will be too late. Tonight is the night, Headmaster hires the new teachers for next term, and he already told me he would like me to stay for another year."
I watched as Theo gathered the two notes on the ground, and searched for the other one. I pulled it out of my back pocket, and set it on the desk and backed away. "Is this what you're looking for?" I said pointing at the letter. He grabbed it and said, "Exactly."
We made our way down the stairs, I was walking by his side, and there was no one around. I believe that they all went down to the Great Hall for the meeting. We turned a corner, and Theo grabbed my hand. My heart felt like it was frozen, He's doing this in public now... He's trying to get caught. I took my hand away from his, and pretended like I had an itch. "I.. I have to go to the bathroom." I said, "I'll catch up with you in a minute."
I walked the opposite way, and walked towards the bathroom. I turned my head around the corner that coincided with the hall Theo walked down. I went to the Professors bathroom instead.
I walked into one of the stalls, and sat on the lid of the toilet, just thinking. I heard footsteps walk in. It was the Aurors that came in. "Why should we do this? We're not getting payed." They were washing their hands. "We have to take in a teacher too. Apparently, he's been talking with the estranged witch. He's the Transfiguration teacher..." My heart sank. Professor Alan?
The man who was nice enough to let Theo and I off without getting into trouble? Maybe, that was his plan all along. I waited until the men left, and I walked out of the stall, and ran towards the stairway.
I lunged myself down the stairs, and jumped practically over people. I saw as Theo was talking to Professor Alan, I had to get Theo away from Alan. Everyone was just getting into the Great Hall, so I had a few minutes to get where I needed to.
"Hey John! Nice performance earlier in Professor James' classroom!" I didn't make eye contact, I patted the kid on the shoulder and moved past him. I made my way to the front of the hall, and stood in front of the Professors table. "Well. Mr. Yerger, seems you can't stay away." Professor Alan said. I managed to not make eye contact with him, and said "I believe so." I looked right at Theo who was staring right back at me with a sense of confusion.
I looked at Theo, and edged my eyes towards the side of the room. "Excuse me, Professor Alan. I need to speak with our Defense Against the DARK ARTS Professor." I made sure to enunciate. Theo stood out of his chair, and walked towards the side with me.
I positioned him so Alan couldn't see me talking. But Alan was watching every move I made. "I overheard two Aurors talking... They're taking Alan into custody tonight. He's a dark wizard. He's working with Madison." Theo's body froze. He looked at me, and stood there quietly.
I saw Alan stand up, and put his hands in his pocket...
He was pulling out his wand. I saw him put it at Theo. I had to react quickly, or Theo would suffer. I pushed Theo out of the way, and sent a spell into the air as Professor Alan did too. We were locked into fighting each other. I watched as Theo hit his head against the door frame, knocking him unconscious. I moved around the room, the students just noticed what was going on. Alan kept trying to turn towards Theo, and get closer to him. I wouldn't let him. I don't care if Alan hit me, I wouldn't let him get Theo.
I looked around the room, and noticed the statue in between us. I shifted out power towards the statue, and watched as it blew up. I lunged myself onto Theo, just as Alan did...
Alan apparated us to a seculded forest.
Where were we?
