Chapter 9- Katie
Chapter 9
We arrived at Saint Albans early in the morning. We asked Jon`s dad if we could go to Saint Albans. He said no at first but we told him how long it took to get there and he agreed. We went to check into a new hotel and set out for breakfast. Luckily for us, there was a cafe right down the block. We walked down the street and went into the cafe. We sat down while Jon`s dad went to order. Then something caught my eye. It was the two guards that Tyler had with him. I prodded Jon in the shoulder and he whirled around. I nodded towards the men and Jon looked where I was looking. He stared at me with a grim smile on his face. Then, the men saw us.
…
One of the men stood up. The second one pulled him back down. He took a walkie-talkie from the table and whispered into it. Jon and I looked at each other. Then the man nodded firmly and stood up. The other man followed. There was a tense moment where we were just staring at each other. Suddenly, both men lunged at our table. We quickly stood up and ran out of the cafe, Jon`s dad right behind us. We ran past hotels, shops and parks. Then we turned down a skinny alleyway. But at the end of the alley there was a tall fence. Luckily, we were far ahead. We took the time to carefully climb over the fence. Once we got over, we ran, with Jon`s dad following, very confused. As I looked back, I saw the two men rapidly scaling the wall. We turned around another building, and another. Then we stopped and hid in the shadows of the building. We watched fearfully as the men stopped too, looked around and kept running. A wave of relief passed over us. How did they find us?
…
Jon and I ended up telling Jon`s dad everything. From my super powers to when Tyler kidnapped us. We were not safe here, but we had no choice. One day when we were out on a walk, we heard muffled screams. We ran towards the source of this distressful noise. We turned the corner to find a burning building. I ran towards the building, but then a grayish blur sped past me. I stood, glued to the spot, mouth hanging open. Then, Jon grabbed a nearby hose and sprayed the building, that wasn't enough. So he called 911 and told them what was happening. Suddenly, the fire went out and smoke floated from the tower. The building was full of ashes and the windows sat on the ground, shattered. By the time the fire men got there, sirens hollering, there was nothing left to do. Jon explained everything to them. While Jon was talking to the fireman, I saw the boy slip into the shadows of a nearby alleyway. I followed him into the darkness.
…
I ran after the boy. “Wait!” I called. “We can help, we have powers too!” At these words the boy turned around to stare at me. “Prove it.” he said quietly. “I- I can’t control it, but I can turn invisible.” I whispered. He stared some more. “If you can’t prove it, I can’t trust you” I was beginning to lose my patience. “Listen!” I said, my cheeks turning red, “I can turn-” my words were cut short by the boy’s gasp. I looked down at my body. But there was no body.
