FIRE IN THE ERIC YEAR PARTY AND PEARL
Chapter 3
Slowly, he swept past the kitchen in the 2nd floor to get the breakfast ready. Beautix always demands breakfast by six.
Tom prepared the bacons, butter and bread- all ready and at last; he clambered down into the stairs straight to the 1st floor in the drawing room. There was a flash of fair light shining in the floors, and booming voice of a pop singer.
Tom moved around, has Gaylord left the TV open? It only sounds like that.
The small TV was left open in which was glittering a ballet show in which girls dressed in crimson dress were dancing away happily. Tom heard it and briskly shot his eyes into the Sofa. There was someone in it, but it wasn’t Beautix.
It was an outsized green giant, with leaves in its neck was watching the TV. It had two long brown horns jutting from its temples, rising down, straight to its elbow. It had a large cherry mouth and two very small blonde eyes, which were truly saying it was a very gentle giant.
But poor Tom didn’t know it was a giant, thinking it as Beautix he turned to close the TV.
“Oyo, you’re finally awake. I got past your bed three times – but you were sleeping like some red pillowcase didn’t have any sleep for a year…” The giant had a terrible loud voice, which sounded more loudly as it burst into titters.
Tom screamed of fear, as he felt it as a giant’s mangled voice, entwined by someone very dominant. “Err- hello, I don’t think it’s –“
“You don’t think you know me, eh? “The giant stumbled over Tom; Tom could feel all his teethes yellow and a bit jade too.” I’m Pearl, just Pearl, at your service.”
“But I don’t think I-“
“You don’t think you have a job for me? “ Pearl anticipated between, showing his large front teethes, “I don’t work really- really, I have got a piece of news for you. “
“A news? “ Tom tried to say “What- “
“What kind of news? Well, it’s not exactly a news, it’s sort of thing I think I’ve got to tell you. “
“Yeah, I can understand.” Tom said with some ire, his face rather frenzy “But – “
“But you think who sent me? Well, I can’t tell it right now, to you, Tommy Tom.”
“I’m not in a rush, so I’ll begin from start – err, can’t you make some tea while I watch this amusing show?” The giant laughed.
Feeling very droll and rather odd, Tom went towards the kitchen to make tea. Within just ten minutes, he returned and the TV was shut off.
“Where were? I thought you went to sleep again.” The giant chortled, in a funny clicking noise.
“So- you said – you want- “
“I wanted to relate you from beginning, about why I’m here. “
“Yeah – “
“Yeah, I ‘m saying. “Said Pearl as he poured the tea in his pursed lips.
“So- “
“So, what was I saying? Yeah, I remember –well, you live with the Brackenstalls right? “
“Ye- “
“You mean yes? “ Pearl coughed and muttered away. “Here I’ve got you a letter, it’s a puzzle, and actually the sender wants you to solve this small mystery yourself, so that you can know the reason yourself. “
“But- “
“But you haven’t got an idea, how to? I have given you a load of time, think, and take help from others BUT I WARN YOU NOT TO SHOW THIS TO YOUR UNCLE. “The giant bellowed.
“Alright, right, right.” Tom murmured, shaking. “And-“
“Here, take this letter, and now- “Pearl said, handing him the letter
“Can you read it to me? I’m bli-” Said Tom, gloomily.
“Oh, don’t mind, you can read it, its magic!”
Tom’s stomach lurched.
There was a knocking on the main door. Beautix and others were back.
“It’s uncle…. Come here!” Tom roared, shoving Pearl into the toilet. Pearl was a lot bigger than the toilet but somehow Tom managed to stuff him inside.
The main door flung opened. Beautix always takes the key with him.
“So, you are already awakened. Good, Good. “Said Beautix briskly, turning towards the toilet.
“No, wait, uncle, here have the breakfast don’t – “Mouth dry, Tom raised his voice to stop Beautix.
“But you know Tom, I’ve got to clean my feet and face. “Said Beautix in alarm “is someone inside?” He asked, pressing the door, to open.
A bomb is going blast now. But before that Tom will blast.
Beautix raked inside the bathroom. But the giant wasn’t inside. It was empty.
“Un-“
“No one’s there.”
‘Did the giant have vanishing powers? ‘Thought Tom dully. So, the giant vanished? But how is it possible?
Suddenly, Tom moved his eyes towards the letter on the table. Beautix or others hadn’t noticed it!
Like an express train, Tom made a grab for the letter and sprinted towards his bedroom. Yeah, he’s got the letter.
Musing about what Pearl had told him, Tom started unwrapping the letter.
To Tom’s surprise, a boy who can never see the world’s beauty, its clumsiness, nature and people he lives with, he could see clearly through the letter but not the surroundings, he almost bellowed.
In the letter, was written:
The five Amulets and the Omega places, Beware!
One maybe found where we please,
Where we rest and cram as we please,
The second will perhaps be hidden in your most loathing place,
In case, whatever it be,
The third might be in the most soaring place,
Hidden and buried in the ice,
The four might be in a dim and sacred place,
Where the cursing folks might live
With their dreading and valiant accuracy!
And in the last was written:
Find the fifth yourself.
From,
Uncle Knuh
What all these mean? Tom thought miserably. The five amulets? Feeling like a mystery, Tom stuffed the letter inside his diary. A boy like him, who is blind, can read this letter?
From downstairs he heard his aunt‘s voice “Tom, I can’t find the TV remote, can you help me find it?”
The next two days were repulsive and bizarre. The weather was turning hot and it was odd for Eric, the planet which has only cold months and the people could hardly bear the temperature which is 30 degrees Celsius. It was horrific, there were a few fire attacks already, and the fire brigades couldn’t calm it down! The fire was swelling nonstop and the water wasn’t working against it. In that tremendous situation, people could hardly believe it’s true. The Eric year was coming on. People say that on this day, Eric was created by gases (but the religious people believe by the Life God) and on that day Mr. Beautix Brackenstalls and Aunt Julia had promised a very jovial party. Mr. Roar and his other relatives were invited (even the whole community), albeit unwillingly when he thought about the weather. The nature was restless because of the heat even Tom who survives in the cold wasn’t much happy with the circumstances and he could hardly believe Beautix was throwing a party in this condition. Tom still muses about that bad dream. There wizard Anna said that her amulets are stolen. Is it true? Perhaps because of that these horrific things are happening? But he hadn’t had a clue. On the Eric year day, Tom woke early by a loud knocking on the door. Wiping his sleepy eyes, Tom pulled the door open, it was Beautix. He had gone out at dawn to get the party foods. Beautix was settled on that he’ll call the Roars to cook and the Roars will actually give the whole burgs for this party, but then he hadn’t laid his eye on Tom either. Tom won’t be bad.
The banquet hall was decorated massively by fog lamps and special paper dishes, with lots of weird pictures and course with the Modals Miki’s favorite sort of big heart shaped balloons and a large table in front with Tom’s baked plump Chocolate cake and a strawberry too, beef corns, Hummus with meat, Special chocolate beans and toffees, subs (Chicken , cooked with a special sauce only found in Eric called, Hub), fried potatoes, fried rice and lots of tasty treats( and I forgot; there was a crowd of people in the hall since the whole community was invited ; it was the Roar’s and Brackenstalls plan). On that very special evening, everyone gathered around to sing the New Year song:
Oh, the New Year, we salute you,
Bring us some joy and content us with your blessed skills
Which you give us every year,
May every year be like this one?
Cheerful and relieved of an old year,
Help us oath the path to goodness
And Whatever the New Year pleases,
Newly New Year!
As the song was concluded, Tom felt a flush of allay run though him. There were lots of boys and girls of his age.
Oh he might be thinking that, about making friends. He would never make a friend.
During his old preschool ages, when he was five, he was loathed and detested by everyone because he was blind. He was the most learned boy in school, always tried hard to make friends, but he would get no results. Without any friend, without someone to talk, he would get angry and sullen and sometimes a terrible breakdown. Carpel, one of the preschool boys had inked his favorite color book once, when Tom was six. But no one really seems to like him much
Tom shielded his feelings to look a blanch boy, with sharp small , green eyes which flashed, as he sat more stiffly like someone being forcefully fed a giant tomato, but Tom wasn’t sure if it was a bit fat boy, he just felt he must be nice.
Feeling demoralized, Tom sat beside the boy in the chairs.
“Hey.” He opened his mouth as the other boy yawned.
“Oh, yes hi. You are Tommy right? Everyone’s being talking about you.” Said the boy. He had a very light voice.
“Me? “ Tom groaned feeling if he’s popular or not.
“Yes. They are saying you are tall like some what a small giant. And you’re blind, I see, so sad for you.”
Blind. This is the only thing Tom hates. A rage was building inside him.
“And you prepared the food? You have really impressed the land lord.” The boy chuckled, gleefully.
The rage calmed down. “Yes…umm...” Tom wondered what to say next.
“I’m Bruce Hyena, nice talking with you.” Smiled Bruce. “You’d know my dad, he’s the oldest one here, and my mom’s the youngest if you ask me. She puts a lot of cream to look young anyway, but she’s getting fat or perhaps fatter. I have a sister, she’s Candy and she’s spoiled. She’ll keep on aggravating you, until you shout with some rage and put some cross remark on your face and oh yeah you are parentles-er- err, sorry I didn’t mean to hurt you.”
A rather moving remark was building on Tom’s face. He didn’t like it by the way, when he’s called parentless, it always panics him. He didn’t know why, when he hears the name orphan, a flow of regret passes through his paralyzed body.
“Yeah, I am not hurt, well, err, where do you live anyway?” asked Tom, turning to be normal.
“In this place, house no 1, it’s the most ruined house, I tell you. Oh here comes Candy.”
A bossy- looking girl appeared. Her short violet hair and a very interventionist-type black sunglass on her livid white face were looking very clever and dominant.
“Hi, Are you messing out here too, Bruce?” sneered the girl.
“Yeah, just making some important affairs with my new friend and also giving him a taste about how blemished you are, Candy. “Scorned Bruce.
“You should have also told him first about how much indiscreet, frustrating and brainless you are, Mr. Hyena. “
“Mind your own business, Candy. AND DON’T MESS AROUND” shouted Bruce.
“I haven’t got any business, want to share your business with mine? “Derided the bossy girl smiling, dimly.
” GET LOST” roared Bruce.
“Dare not say me those!” the girl snickered “You know I’m going to mama, MOM, brother’s maddening me, too much. Even you know he failed in Shamanism test, got 23 – “
“STOP IT CANDY “yelled Bruce Hyena.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m minding my own business now; I shall take your advice poor, thick, obtuse, daft, silly, foolish, and injudicious boy!”
Candy sauntered happily perhaps to blurt to her mom that Bruce had failed.
“Have you really failed? “ Tom asked.
“Oh no, not really, eh, just got 42, does that mean fail? “ Bruce beamed weakly.
“I never failed in my life. “ Tom smirked happily.
“Yeah, I know there are few students who are study worm, and you know you can’t have everything in life, Tom” laughed Bruce. “Look at the Boot’s family, they are all full of vice, and they are so bad, that they won’t mind disregard you in front of the public, and their son Dex, look at him, first in every class. That’s how the thing goes, Tom”
Anyway, Bruce seems friendly enough Tom just as Tom seemed friendly to Bruce. ‘I’m not dreaming again, I hope’ thought Tom when suddenly a question came in his mind.
“Are you going to Omega? “ He asked very fast.
“WHAT? “ Bruce thundered “How dare you know? “
“I was right? “ Tom uttered without conviction “I just guessed. “
“ Father said that only students who are good from their heart, meticulous and a bit studious only get the chance to go to Omega, the largest school in Amnesia , you know. “ supposed Bruce. “Well, I’m not much cautious or studious, I tell you. “
“But you must be a very good human being. It is a way important than being good in studies. “
“Well, my exam remarks say ‘meet standard’ and they aren’t much bad. I only detest that what, yeah Shamanism. All you have to do is learn by heart and keep on learning and learning until your grade becomes Excellent. I always get satisfactory in that, eh.” Said Bruce in revulsion.
“Have you seen the news yet? The weather’s boiling. “Said Tom.
“Yeah” Bruce consented.
Like friends, Tom related Bruce about the bad dream he had.
“WOW!” Bruce thundered again, shaking dust from the ceilings (a few people gazing at him). “Amulets! You know about Anna? “Asked Bruce as if Anna is his aunt.
“No.” murmured Tom.
“She is the greatest Witch who is also called ‘Wizard’, the only title given to the greatest Horologers.” Grinned Bruce. “My dad is her fan. He works in the Burgs Bank, I must tell”
“But she said to Richey Campbell that her Amulet of life, Amulet of Moon, Amulet of Sun, Amulet of fire and Amulet of ice are stolen. Without-“
“those we can’t control fires, ice will melt and there will be more heat and the moon (accident) will go bigger right? I wonder what will happen about the Amulet of life. “Bruce completed.
A flash of intuition, stroked in Tom’s mind.
“Hey, you know the weather’s boiling and people can’t control fire! “
“So what? “Bruce replied stupidly.
“Oh, Bruce wake up! It’s all because of the amulets. It’s because they are stolen by someone and he is using the powers of that Amulet to do these!” Tom blurted out, and few people looked at him suspiciously.
“It can be I appreciate your words. “ Bruce inquired “But why you dreamt about that? “
“Perhaps…” Tom’s brain was running or may be galloping like a steady horse “Richey or Wizard Anna might want help from me, Bruce!”
“Oh… “Bruce said miserably “Well, why you? She could have called on you, and she told you in dream?”
“Perhaps the circumstances are risky and very precarious” Tom twitched his head. “I wonder if Sultan is hiding in the faded lighthouse. Well, do you know who R is?”
“OH! NO “Bruce thundered again, now shaking apples from the plates.” I know it’s all a bundle of jokes and hogwash. I’m not a bit interested in all these JUNKS”
“Alright, no problem. I am not talking about it again “Tom said grudgingly but feeling very excited.
A woman’s shout rung in their ears.
“Who’s that? EH? Tom?? Was it you? “Bruce asked suddenly.
“Do I look like girls or my voice is like that” Tom said, feeling very wrung.
“OH NO!” Someone shouted.
“It’s coming from there. “Shouted Bruce as he tugged Tom to go.
The two boys ran in the track to the Hall. It was just in the right.
Tom had no sight that was true but Bruce’s shouts told him it was a disaster.
A blazing, vindictive inferno was shooting from the lilac curtains, hissing like Lord Luna. The fire enlarged as all the people ran towards the most horrible kitchen burned terribly, few crying away madly. Such a disaster!
The kitchen table was smoldered badly, and the drapes were black, which clearly told Tom that it was curled and whorled by the brutal fire, which was frightening the crowd of people. Tom stared at the fire, he couldn’t see it, but could feel it which seemed very beautiful to him. Bruce cried out; looking at his mother who…
It was the worst day in Tom’s life. Such preparations, such jolliness were ruined by the fire. No one could tell how the curtains were fired up; it was Candy who discovered the curtain blazed. After that, there was probably something near the curtains which made the fire swell and burn everything. Tom couldn’t talk to Bruce, but he could understand how Bruce could feel. The fire had burned up the whole hall, and somehow Tom and Bruce had escaped from the dodgy place. Bruce couldn’t run his eyes were full of water; Still Bruce had seized Tom away.
The Brackenstalls were also alright except a painful scratch in Gaylord’s leg, which occurred when he had grabbed himself to run. Bruce was okay too, and Tom had only got a big cut on his knee, which could reveal flesh clearly.
The charred Banquet hall was lost forever, but Tom could feel that the fire was a threat. A warning before something, seeming to say; be aware, it’s only the start. After all, all these happened in the Eric year day! This means this year is going to be shocking…more shocking for, perhaps for Tom?
The days weren’t going as smoothly as Tom had hoped, and course you can’t find mysteries in everyday life. Mysteries are just like fire, can set up from anywhere, anytime. After the fire in the Eric year day, people had nothing much to babble except the fire. They would swear to talk about the person who set the curtains charred, because people rather think it’s some sort of potent and authoritative person who might have done that. Tom had looked forward in solving this simple mystery; perhaps he could ask Bruce and Candy?
Aunt Julia hadn’t changed at all. She constantly bullied him, Gaylord screamed about his cut, Katie forcing Tom to look after her pet and somehow Tom had become least than a servant to the Brackenstalls. He had become a slave to them.
He hadn’t seen Bruce or Candy of them in the roads. Beautix had met the Hyenas and what they say is Bruce is very sad about that sudden issue. What could be more depressing than losing your mother? But last day, he had found Bruce in the Park, talking with a stranger. There, Bruce had told him that he had something important to tell Tom, on the coming Sunday in the Spring Park.
The little Modern Art Park or famously known as Spring Park of the Quarrel Avenue didn’t have any more impulsive people except one. There were a few children riding on a large elephant balloon and swinging a swing.
At first, he couldn’t detect Bruce right away. Instead he found the only one impulsive boy in green hair, very ashen-looking face, as if the boy has recently failed an examination. His eyes were fairly unpleasant, bluish-purple eyes, glittering at Tom.
Suddenly, Tom felt a boy say.
“Hey. “The boy said palely. “You are Bonny, right? And blind?”
“Tommy. Yeah. “Tom corrected him monotonously, with a slight cough.
“Very strange name. Tom… male cats? “The boy sounded too much like a vex thing. “ And my name’s Dex boot, not really that I prefer Boots. Well, just Tommy? “
“Yeah ...” Tom said in perplexity “I’ve heard of you”
“Yeah, you might have heard of my new Medic logy (Study of medicines) result, well I’m first in it. “
“Perhaps…. Bruce told me about you.”
“Bruce? That penniless and scanty fellow, you can say, they are very envious to me “
“Why?” Tom asked with disgust.
“Well, we are the richest one here, Tom. Well, err, nice to meet you. “Said Dex with a sort of sharp giggle, as he raised his hands to shake.
“Well, that’s it, I’m not much pleased to meet you. “ Tom said drably.
“Yeah, Yeah.” Dex said sharply. “You’d meet the same end as Bruce’s family. Brainless, motherless fellow. And you, a parentless fellow. “
“Say that again!” Tom raised his voice, tersely.
“So you’re going to fight me, eh? Not now, not now, some day of course, if I can meet you,” said Dex in disgust, and hastily walked away, shooting a boorish look at Tom.
Dex might have dodged away because Tom was a lot braver than him and too angry.
Tom felt Bruce and Candy pacing to him from the Swings. Before everything, Tom related to them about Dex Boot.
“A very offensive boy. Let me find him, I’ll change my name if I didn’t break his arms and legs sent him to the hospital for a bed rest for exactly a year. “Candy divulged, perhaps something she wanted to say for ages.
“Later on, you can deal with Dex; after all he’s going to omega too!” Bruce said with abhorrence.
“What!” Candy cried out, as if she had landed from space to Earth” This is not viable”
“This is likely to happen. After all he’s got money and money is above everything! “Bruce exclaimed. “ But how he got chance in Omega is a complete secret…”
“No. Money can buy you everything, but not happiness. Think, you’ve lose your mother just like me, can you buy it with money, Bruce? “Candy explained.” There are many things in this world you cannot buy with gold and wealth, Bruce. “
“I agree with you. “ Tom sighed, as Bruce muttered under his breath.
“Well. “ Bruce said “I wanted your help for something. Dad didn’t really want us to go for such a dangerous matter, but I didn’t listen.”
“What’s it? “ Tom asked, very eagerly.
“We want revenge. “ Candy roared, feeling stricken.
“Revenge?” Tom trembled.
“Course, revenge from the murderer of our mother!” Bruce shouted “Dad says it an accident but it’s not! It was a murder, someone had planned it. Say, Tom you’ll help us!”
“Yes. “Said Tom with a strange pain “After all, I can’t let your mother die without any punishment. “
“You know, you are very good. There is something which is above everything. “Said Candy. “It’s goodness, braveness. “
“But it’ll be risky.” Bruce said coldly.
“I don’t care how risky it’d be! So, what are your plans? “
Tom guessed” Umm… You mean the Boot’s right? “
“Exactly!” Bruce alleged” It could be only him, no one hates as much as the Boot’s. We can spy them!”
“So… you mean we shall act like a secret agent and spy them up?” Tom said, weirdly.
“But why should they do this? It’s completely illogic, Bruce!” Candy with disgust. “We’ve no proofs, at all. “
“But I’m sure…” Bruce murmured. “We can be involved in espionages! We can spy them whole day!”
“I understood why you get so bad in studies.” Candy muttered “How can we inspect someone like this? We may end up with no results! “
“Then ask him straight. “
“Never” Tom said “He’d never say. “
“Then? We’ve to be sure that it’s DEX!”
“OK. “Candy exclaimed “Listen, We won’t asking him straight or inspect him. He doesn’t know me right? Or do I know him? I’ll soon be his very best friend and he’d tell me everything. I’ll act that I’m …. Lavender Bone!”
“Splendid! He neither knows how you look like, nor are you Bruce’s sister!! It is a terrific thought; looks like you are having a brainstorm!” Tom said cheerily.
“But it’d take a lot of time… Candy…” Bruce said with no interest at all.
“Wait and see.” Candy said abruptly.
“Alright, but I want to see some pun-“
“WAIT AND SEE” Candy warned her face shiny with the brilliant idea.
The Boots were clearly the most richest and foul family in the Quarrel Avenue. They had a large mauve mansion, a lime, large backyard, and splendid flora. It was completely a king’s mansion.
10 days had passed. Who knows how Candy might be doing, but Bruce said to wait near the Boot mansion today to Tom, Candy will be asking him today about the fire.
Tom and Bruce hid near the bushes, while Candy in a very pretty crimson dress waited outside, her smile rather fixed. There was DEX talking with her. Tom heeded them with full caution.
“- And you can think about the weather, it’s like a rampage.” Dex sniggered. “After the entire Hyena’s so poor.”
“Yeah.” Candy gave a short snort “Do you know anything about the fire in the Eric year day? “
“No. I was rather frightened about the fire. I really pity Bruce. He has a sister right, what’s her name?”
“Mum... yes…Candy, I think. “Candy stammered.
“Yeah. Bruce’s father is a Burgs Bank Worker; I hope they won’t hungry for the rest of them months. “
Candy became very stern “yes…”
“What’s up with you?”
“Nothing, really, nothing. Well, who do you think can fire?”
“Anyone. I haven’t got the least idea. We have not hadn’t done it, I tell you. The Bruce’s think we’ve done it, but we didn’t really. My father and mother weren’t in the party, only I was. Well, how many times are you going to ask that thing? “
“Oh… well… looks….like …..I am having a stomach ache…..I’ll have to go, see yam soon. “
Dex bounded back to his mansion and Candy sprinted towards us.
“I’ve been asking him for last three days about this, and I don’t think the Boots have done it, Bruce. “Candy said sharply.
“Then I don’t know who else can do it, “Bruce said, sadly.
“You know what I think?”
“What?”
“It was an accident.”
“It only looks like that.” Tom consented. “Why would someone want to kill your mum, Bruce? “
“NO.” Bruce boomed “It was a murder!”
“Stop it, or I’ll MURDER YOU, you malicious, cruel, dense, mindless and dim-witted BOY.” Candy said terribly, shaking the passer-byes.
“You’ve returned to your nasty mood I see. “ Bruce mumbled softly.
“We’ll see about that .Wasn’t it your idea that the Boots have done it? “
“And didn’t you say that you’d act like lavender Bones and be DEX’s friend? “ Bruce thundered.
“Yeah, and my plan worked, you silly and brainless get!” Candy roared.
“OH.” Tom thundered, even louder than Candy and Bruce “Stop ARGUEING. You’ve got to solve out that the real mystery of this case, right?”
“Yeah, but he started first. “ Candy said, sternly.
“LIER!” Bruce shouted. “Let me tell this to dad!”
“STOP, I SAY STOP” Tom bellowed “Stop fighting; can’t you two think of something sensible?”
“Well… it’s all because you were adopted!” Bruce cried out.
“Really? “ Tom asked.
“Yes. I am Bruce’s half-sister, I was adopted.” Candy said in a much wrung voice.
“Stop, I need to tell you something. “ Something had flashed in Tom’s mind. He should have told Bruce and Candy about Pearl, early.
“Really, you can show me the letter? “ Candy said, interestingly.
“I’ve learned it, somehow, here –
The five Amulets and the Omega places, Beware!
One maybe found where we please,
Where we rest and cram as we please,
The second will perhaps be hidden in your most loathing place,
In case, whatever it be,
The third might be in the most soaring place,
Hidden and buried in the ice,
The four might be in a dim and sacred place,
Where the cursing folks might live
With their dreading and valiant accuracy!
And in the last was written:
Find the fifth yourself.
“I wonder how you can see it when you’re blind as boots.” Bruce buzzed.
“WOW” Candy roared “the five amulets of Amensia! I know about them! Does that mean we have got to search about them? We can start that in Omega! Sadly you’re blind you cannot go.”
“Yea!” Tom exclaimed “You know I’m really excited about this, Candy. Looks like, we’ve to solve this mystery. “
“So, you know what? “ Candy said abruptly in a very wound up tone “If we solve this mystery, we can get the five amulets! But I wonder who sent it. It’s jumbled, right? “
“Yeah” Tom said, curiously. “And pearl won’t tell me the name. “
“It would have been great if we knew magic. We could magic it out. “Candy said, comically.
“And the first Pl-“Suddenly, Tom looked at Bruce, he was marching away.
“Where are you going Bruce?” Tom asked.
“I’m going away. You two unravel and decipher this gag”
“So what you want? “
“You? “ Candy laughed “Solving the witticism case of that murder. “
“It’s all because you don’t care about her!” Bruce said in a loud voice.
“Why should I? “ Candy said carefully “I was 8 that time, my dear mother died, and you remember Bruce? Your mother had laughed in my face. I never liked her. So what were we saying Tom?”
“You carry on that, I’ll solve it mine.”
“Good luck, dim- witted, boy!” Candy roared with sniggers. But, Tom felt pity for Bruce, the motherless boy. After all, he also doesn’t have a mother. He could feel that, a cry inside his heart, and perhaps his own head was shouting “Tom, Tom, and Tom!” He talked with Candy a few more minutes and started towards his house, feeling strangely united.
“Five more steps to balcony... and then left”
Tom kept on muttering as darkness and the frosty winds fluffed through him, making way for Tom as he paddled into the balcony in the cozy night, in Earth that the month was February, 14th. There went a new kind of jolliness into Tom, when he arrived into the balcony, stretching his arms, feeling strangely happy.
What’s there to be happy? He’s living with the grisly Brackenstalls in the biggest misery anyone ever had in the Quarrel Avenue even in Lob stock, he doubts. There’s nothing so mesmerizing in today’s arctic breezes, aloof weather which was crafting a new type of happiness into him, as it struck three A.M, ten minutes. It was the time when Tom was born, to say directly it was Tom’s birthday, his thirteenth birthday and it was who exercising and realizing the melancholy from the blind boy’s heart, giving him unlimited joy. Tom suddenly remembered a strange thing.
Now I shall tell you a very strange incident which took place in Tom’s tenth birthday, on September 4th (That’s the day, actually Beautix found Tom, so that eventually became Tom’s birthday) midnight. Beautix was roused up by someone sauntering in the floor. It could be only Tommy, thought Beautix. Beautix got up, skeptically, pondering what that is. He moved his face down on the floor and he saw Tom on the floor, sitting and drawing something. But worse! Beautix had heard some people are sleep walker, but never a sleep artist. He peeped into the page Tom was drawing, with closed eyes.
Tom’s pens were going nonstop, drawing a rather beautiful woman. Beautix was never so positive that Tom could draw so well. When Tom had finished, he fell into the floor asleep. What’s up with Tom? Beautix looked into the page, Tom had drawn. It was a woman with long, blond hair, a diamond tiara in her appealing head, and in one of her attractive hands, she had a large eagle – quill and she appeared to be very noble and gracious and quite posh too. Beautix couldn’t explain to himself, that who could that woman be, perhaps he could find out that tomorrow?
But when tomorrow, he showed Tom that picture and asked about the lady, Tom couldn’t remember anything at all. It remained a secret.
Enjoying the cool breeze, suddenly making Tom’s little heart crack out, a voice walloped hard into the air.
“Tom…”
“What!” Tom cried out, as he tried to concentrate in the whisper, feeling very chilly all of a sudden.
“Tom…” “Tom…” “Tom...”
It kept on sounding unusual as Tom felt himself surrounded in much more darkness, constantly ripping through his solemn mind. What’s up with him?
Is he dreaming again? If he is, it’s a nightmare.
The voice stopped quickly, not making the blind panic any more. “I must be tired so am dreaming all nonsense.” Tom said to himself, dragging himself back to his storeroom.
“WAKE UP, TOM WAKE UP!”
Aunt Julia sounded too wicked in the cold morning, making Tom dizzier.
“Wasp?” Said Tom, groaning.
“Today the Mayors inspecting every house. I want everything cleaned and polished like glasses. “She added much more wickedly.
Tom abided by Aunt, started scrubbing the kitchen counters, happily. There was something happy in the air, which was always wishing him Happy Birthday, but none of the Brackenstalls remembered or heed about it at all. The Mayor was bought quickly, hastened with a cup of ice tea , lots of bread and mayonnaise even if the Mayor said he was in a diet, he was forcefully fed Tom’s baked large cupcakes, which are not in a shape of cup at all but they taste good indeed, and lots of sushi, bacons and ten types of treats.
“Oh, no more, I’m fed, I’m dead-“
“No, you’re not dyeing, sir.” Said Auntie, very kindly “I’m kind and I need to be kinder to you, well TOM what about the hummus? It’s so ugly! Decorate please! Quick, we want to save our prestige. “Tom knew that well, but never knew it’s the recipe of Aunt Julia to save prestiges.
“More cakes, Alicia.” Tom said.
“Argghhhha! Enough! I’ll now leave this job or will get myself resigned!” Alicia wailed in a disrupted tone.
“You may resign but I can never.” Grunted Tom, irately shoving the cakes to be baked into the Baking Machine as Uncle Beautix and Aunt were nattering and chattering with the over-fed Mayor.
“Mr. Markesan, a few more bacons for you, you would love them!” Tom added feeling excited about how the Mayor will look after being fed all.
“TOM!”
It was an order from Katie, now fourteen. “What?” Asked Tom.
“Have this chocolate, our best birthday present, mom said to give it to you.” Tom lunged towards the small squeezed chocolate, having it contentedly. Tom was always content but it perplexed him to think why Katie did not eat it at all. It must be because it was very cheap as Katie loved costly things like diamonds which is enough to bring a smirk in her red face.
After every chore and the Mayor looking like over-fed tomato, gone Tom fetched ‘Tom and Lobstock ‘for a good read. It was his favorite book not only because the hero was under his name, but it was very informative. In the afternoon, he asked Alicia to read it to him:
Tom is this boy’s nickname but real name is Jackie was found on a cold and dizzy morning, by a dazed gentleman, Mr. Leo who soon took Tom. Mr. Albino Leo was a man of forty that time, with burly, and muscular arms and legs, and sharp but somewhat a blunt head, as most people call him very imperceptive, (that sounds nice, since he’s bald), and he’s got the full power, when on the wrestling field or sometimes good money when he’s about to purchase a new table set.
He is black, mostly like the Ciao people, if you ask me and it looks very nice, when he wears his little russet cap, in his bald head.
So on that cold morning of January, in his overcoat, Mr. Leo was strolling in Lament Avenue, his home land, situated in Red Cat village of Amensia. He was busy thinking about his hectic business schedule, which is not going to over until the coming Friday, when he had heard the fatal cry of a small boy. He had heard that charily, and understood it was coming from the Beggar Street. There on the lane, lay lots of ugly boys, snoring peacefully. The king of Lobstock, Terra, hates beggars. Beautix has packed much poise that the cry is coming from here. With dismay in heart , Beautix walked till he found a small baby, with brown hairs, and a pale fair face, with pasty cerulean , beautiful eyes, and it was what making that sound in that woozy morning. Feeling strange, Leo peered into the blankets to get a better view of the small boy. Eccentrically, Leo raised his hands to pick up the boy. He had a small son too, just like this street baby, named John and a wife, Aouda.
Both of them had died of a very weird sickness called Jaundice .The boy’s cry melted his heart away, and he started remembering his mature, heartbreaking moments, moments long ago forgotten, began to shiver his heart with gloominess. After his wife’s death, Leo had opened a small restaurant ‘La Plaza’ but it’s not running well. He could still think of his son, John, whom he called Johnny.
He had shared many golden moments with his family, and many poignant moments too. He could see, as if, his wife and his six – year old son on the bed, dead forever. Suddenly, he felt his chest was being hammered by sorrow.
Strangely, this baby looks same like his son John. Same, sapphire, moving eyes, same fair and brown hairs and the same pleased smile, the baby was showing as Beautix picked the baby up. He could see his own son’s reflection in the baby’s face, glowing with half- sadness and half-happiness. At that time, he understood, he couldn’t let the baby away. He moved his face towards an old man, with lots of freckles in the face.
“Where’s this baby’s mother, do you know anything?”
Leo asked, miserably, feeling very depressed
. “Oh, Jesus!” The old man sighed. “The boy’s motherless, haven’t even got a name. No one knows anything about the boy, I can only tell you that this poor fellow was found on the road, very dirty and worn out and I took him here, I am searching for someone to take care of that, but-”
“But he’s not supposed to be here!” He exclaimed loudly “He would die!”
“Yes. Of course. Only we can wait and see what future stores for this small boy.”
After that day, Leo took the small boy and the boy and was named Tommy, and LEO called Tom for short, but his real name was Jackie and it seemed a very nice name for a boy with no last name. This might be the small history of Tom, but a major secret still lies enclosed up. (Leo still believes he’ll find Tom’s parents anyway)
‘“How was chapter 1?” Alicia asked.
“Nice, read more.”
“No, more.” Alicia showed an ire face as Tom ducked, feeling really contented in his thirteenth birthday, even in his lonely and gloomy life in the Quarrel House no4, in the Quarrel Avenue.
It was the beginning of the snowfall season, in Earth it was 26thFebrurary. Snowfall always creates haphazard movement in Tom’s brain as he knows pretty well that he may never see snow or may enjoy snowball dukes game with Gaylord and will spend his nice days, chancily cleaning more effectively. It’s even possible that Uncle Beautix may appoint him to shove out snow from the roads, it’s a great help to the Mayor according to Beautix and will save enough prestige according to Aunt Julia. But for Gaylord and Katie it is a fun season with lots of gifts.
Tom had been always looking into the school things of Katie, touching them and feeling excited when Katie was away. He always wanted to go to school and when he expressed his desires to Aunt Julia, she said there’s no school for a half-witted blind like him.
There have been days when he had screamed and kicked whatever comes before him, in his childhood. He was different from others and he would observe the way others could see something. In his early years , he thought everyone would be blind like him, and he was like any other child but had something different, he didn’t have that I came, I conquered , that heroic feeling in him because he wasn’t the son of the Brackenstalls. He even asked Julia about his parents and she was never engrossed in it, shocked her head and said repeatedly that don’t ask her questions. Tom never knew what was so stupid in these simple questions that would drive his mind, swiftly from the real world.
On the first snowfall day, there was a quite whiteout for few early hours of morning and then there rose all cloudy and merry, as Gaylord and Katie hastened to play Dukes Snow.
It was an exciting game but Tom never played so, he wasn’t allowed actually; you need to make snowballs and throw them through fire targets and you’ll get points for every small target you throw like 50,100 and 150. None got 150 yet it’s the most challenging. But Tom got one when he was ten, and was whipped for playing and destroying some of the snow balls made by Gaylord.
So on that seven in the morning he quickly made some tea and breads buttered nicely and putting them in the table he thought of going outside. It can only be a dream.
“May I go outside, Auntie?” Tom inquired.
“No.” Was the stiff reply.
Groaning, Tom ambled into his storeroom staring out from the clashed window. There was a clattering sound from down, and a little fatty head popped inside through the window, making Tom jump. It was Bruce. “Who..?”
“Bruce, Tom.” Bruce said.
“Whoa! Be careful.” Bruce added after a snigger.
“You here?” Tom asked somehow, trying to find Bruce.
“Yes. I got your address somehow but most people went dreary at the name of the Brackenstalls.” Bruce snorted. “Come out, you aren’t supposed to be scorching inside a storeroom whole day.”
“But I’m not permitted to go out.”
“Come on, no need of permission.”
“Aunt will be cross.” Tom said, warningly.
“Let her be so.”
“Then who’ll save me from her blows?” Asked Tom.
“Umm… none.” Bruce answered after musing a bit.
“Alright.” Tom didn’t whim a bit, but took his sneakers sneaking and his rugby sweater and in a minute he had thrown himself out of the window and was down in the icy ground.
