Chapter 2
We walked through the posh, neat little streets of District One. The district specialised in luxury, and we knew it. Soon, we came to a huge marble-walled hotel with tall black doors. We entered the building.
The incredibly short, mean-faced woman at the front-desk scowled up at me through pointy-cornered glasses, as Odium, Shadow and I walked through the grand foyer. 'What do you want?' she sneered.
'Uhh- I was wondering if you had any rooms left?' I asked, aware of all the eyes in the foyer on me.
'Yes. We do. Any other pointless questions you were wondering?' the lady snapped coldly.
'Let me handle this,' said Odium in his smooth voice.
He gave me a gentle push to one side and flashed his charming smile. 'What is a charming young lady doing in such a dull job? Such an angel should be treated like a queen.'
I stared, bewildered, as the lady's ice instantly melted, and was replaced with a girly giggle and fluttering eyelashes.
'Miss, we have been travelling far and wide over Panem, on foot. We are ever so weary. Would a room for the night be much trouble? We'll be no trouble, and pay you well.'
'Oh, but please stay more than just the night,' she purred, taking down a room key from a hook. I glanced at Odium in shock. He simply winked at the lady.
'Sorry, babes, but we've got to go soon as possible. You probably won't even see us tomorrow.'
'Don't go, for my heart might just break,' she whispered romantically.
'Just- give us the key,' I snapped, breaking the moment.
She gave me the most poisonous look I imagined possible, and smacked the silver key down on the desk. 'See you at dinner, sweetheart,' said Odium, as the desk-woman went pink and waved goodbye.
'God, how?' I muttered as we crossed the foyer.
'Just tell 'em what they want to hear,' he murmured back, his voice no longer sweet and seducing, but more rough and normal.
'WAIT!' called an angry voice. We spun around to see the little woman behind us, arms crossed, eyes livid.
'You really thought I was going to let THAT filthy beast in MY hotel?' she barked, poking Shadow in the backside. 'I have a stable next door for a REASON!'
'Ugh. Seeya,' I muttered as I lead my thin black horse out of the hotel.
'Meet you in the room!' called Odium.
I took Shadow into the grand stable next door. It had blue-grey marble walls and vast amounts of hay for every horse. She gave a whinny, sat down and munched on some of her own straw. I gave her one last pat and headed back to the hotel.
But when I got to the room, the door was incredibly stiff. 'Odium?' I called, banging on the door.
Suddenly, there was a blood-curdling scream of pain. My heart froze. 'ODIUM?' I yelped.
The door flew open and I stumbled into the room. To my utter surprise and fear, three men as well as Odium stood in the room, all in white uniform. One had Odium in a head-lock. The second was rifling through the draws of our grand room. The third was pointing a gun at my head.
I recognised them instantly.
Peacekeepers.
