Chapter Seven
Hippogriffs
Hippogriffs are another creature used for flight. So what exactly is a Hippogriff? A Hippogriff is an eagle/horse hybrid. It has the head, wings and front legs of an eagle and the tail and back legs of a horse. It is often mistaken for a Griffin. However a Griffin has the back of a Lion whereas Hippogriffs backs are like that of a horse.
Now as you can see they come in many different colors, just like eagles and horses do. They may look pretty, but it is important that you know a little more before we just start to fly on them. The first thing you need to know is that Hippogriffs are very proud creatures. They can understand what you are saying and if you insult them in any way, they will not hesitate to attack you. The Ministry has classed Hippogriffs as XXX creatures and they have done that for a reason. If you look at their front legs, you can see that they have very sharp talons on them. They use these talons to attack. If you ever insult a Hippogriff, it might just be the last thing you ever do. However, as long as you are courteous and treat them with respect, they will do the same to you.
Just like Thestrals, Hippogriffs can be tamed. If you are lucky enough to have a herd of Hippogriffs, you will never need to fly on a broom again. Once domesticated, they can be extremely loyal creatures and will protect you and your surrounding home.
Pros & Cons of Hippogriffs
Hippogriffs are very strong creatures and they can travel great distances. They can be more comfortable than riding a broom for a long stretch of time. However, it is important to remember that they are living things as well and you must treat them as such.
Hippogriffs do not have as strong of a sense of direction as Thestrals do, so you still need to know where you are going if you are riding a Hippogriff. They can also be difficult to mount if you insult them, attacking you instead of letting you ride on them.
When you approach your Hippogriff, you need to move slowly. The first thing you need to do is to keep eye contact with it and then slowly bow. Then you need to wait for the Hippogriff to bow back to you. Once this has been done, you may approach the Hippogriff. Once you have approached the Hippogriff, before you mount it, make sure you pat it first. This will create a bond between the two of you and will help the Hippogriff be more comfortable with you.
Once you have patted the Hippogriff and he seems warmed up to you, it is time to mount him. It is just like mounting a horse. Grab the Hippogriff and swing your leg over its body. Then make sure you are firmly seated. Before you take off, make sure you have a firm grip around its neck. Don’t pull any of its feathers or he might buck you off. Once you have a firm grip, squeeze your legs together. This will inform the Hippogriff that you are ready to take off. Normally if you are traveling by a Hippogriff, you would attach some reins to the Hippogriff so you can steer him in the direction you want to go. Some Hippogriffs are trained on a certain route and will not need reins.
