Thestrals

What exactly is a Thestral? A Thestral is a black winged horse that has a skeletal body. Its face looks reptilian. Thestrals do not have feathers, instead they have wings. Their wings are like leather. Other than their wings, Thestrals are very similar to horses.

Now Thestrals are classified as an XXXX creature and are very rare. The Ministry considers them very dangerous and you must get a special license in order to breed them. A lot of people associate Thestrals with death. The reason for this is because only people who have seen someone die can actually see Thestrals. Because of this, there are people who misjudge Thestrals as aggressive and omens of misfortune. This is inaccurate, however. Thestrals will attack anyone they deem a threat but as long as you don’t do anything stupid around them, they will tolerate you. They can even be tamed and once tamed, they are extremely loyal to their owners.

Thestrals are actually very smart. Tamed Thestrals can even distinguish between a friend and an enemy. Included in a Thestral’s intelligence is an amazing sense of direction. They can get you anywhere you need to go and they are also extremely fast. Here at Hogwarts we have our very own herd of Thestrals. They are the ones who pull the carriages from the Hogwarts Express to the Castle. The Hogwarts herd are so used to humans, that they will not attack unless you attack first.

When you ride a Thestral, you need hold on to their mane and put your legs behind their wing joints. This will make you stable as the Thestral flies. To tell your Thestral your location, you simply need to mount your Thestral and then tell it where you want to go. After a slight pause, they will take off and take you to your location. There is no need for you to steer the Thestral.

Pros & Cons of Thestrals

One reason to travel by Thestral is their sense of direction. If you are unsure of the exact location of where you are going, you just need to tell the Thestral and they will get you there. Depending on how far of a journey it is, they can also get you there very quickly. Thestrals are also very loyal and they will try and protect you if you were to get attacked during the flight.

Of course there are some cons with traveling on a Thestral. There is a possibility that if you do not have a firm grip, you could fall mid flight. It can also be disconcerting if you have never seen death to fly on one, seeing as how you would not be able to see the creature. This also makes it dangerous while flying because you may not know where you need to hold on, which would hinder your grip.
