Chapter 1
22 June
Nurse decided I needed a book to write in, because I’m twelve. She says I talk too much and need a place to share my thoughts. The whole point of talking is so someone will respond, and I highly doubt that a boring old notebook like this will talk to me.
Anyways, Nurse thinks I talk too much about myself and I should do it less, but I think I might just talk about myself. I’m Diana, second princess of the land of Korne, daughter of King Korne the XVIII. (that says 18, by the way. I’ve been learning numerals.) My older sister is Princess Charlotte, and she’ll be queen someday. Me being second means that I’ll probably never be important, but I get all the perks and none of the responsibility, so that’s okay with me.
I guess a pretty important part of my kingdom’s history is my brothers. I’ll talk about them so Nurse won’t be too angry and so I can truthfully say my one-sided conversation with a book hasn’t been just about myself. I’ll start with Killian. Killian Percy Korne XIX, crown prince of the Land of Korne, is my best friend. All the grown-ups whisper when they talk about him, but no one tells me anything. Char says they’re worried about him, but she won’t say why. I guess it is pretty dangerous, sneaking around like he does at night in the villages, but what harm can come? I don’t think it’s good for him though. Even though he made me promise not to tell anyone, whenever he comes back he sleeps really late and sometimes he smells like vomit. I love Killian though, no matter his faults. He’s the only one who ever pays attention to me.
Then there’s Nathan Julius Korne. Oh yes, he’s my ghost brother. Never knew him, and neither did Char. You see, the astrologers saw some jibber-jabber in the sky that foretold of dangers and threats to the kingdom, but as with every prophecy, there was a good thing thrown in there. A boy with a mark would come and save Korne from those dangers and threats. This prophecy was made shortly before Nathan was born. The astrologers confirmed that Nathan was the prophesied one because of his different eyes, one blue and one green, so naturally he had loads of protection.

Nurse called me out for lessons and I wasn’t able to come back. I despise algebra. All those x variables confuse me. Char would help me but she’s sick.
But back to Nathan. Mind you, I found all this out from careful eavesdropping and questioning of servants and librarians. (Shh, don’t tell!) Definitely not Mother or Daddy, and Killian just doesn’t like talking about it. He doesn’t know much either, as he was just two years old when Nathan mysteriously disappeared. Only three months old, someone with evil intentions stole Nathan and no one found a trace of the perpetrator. Killian said Mother was never the same after that, and I believe him.
The guards thought they could find a different-eyes baby, but apparently his kidnapper was an expert. They scoured the country for the kid, but to no avail.
So then Mother had Char a year later, and then had me in hopes of having another boy. That never happened. Then I guess Mother was tired of having kids, so she stopped. That's what Nurse says. I think Daddy told her to stop having kids because she's mad. Well, not crazy-mad, but sick-mad. She's always so sad and critical! I feel like I can never talk to her. Char says to leave her alone. She doesn't need to tell me; I do that already.

I was sketching when Nurse snapped at me to get dressed. I did, and I’m now in my blue robes, sitting in my wardrobe, writing like she told me to. Oh, Nurse. She’s just a servant but she thinks she can tell me what I can and can’t do. I’m a princess! It’s my job to boss people around, not hers.
And... I hear her footsteps coming toward me. She will probably yell at me for writing - which she told me to do - instead of getting ready for the parade - which she also told me to do. Grown-ups are confusing.
