Chapter 7- Broom Companies and their History
Chapter 7
In the early days of brooms they were not well made. They were also not very efficient and couldn't go very fast since they were meant to just go from one place to another. Nowadays brooms are comfortable, fast, and practical and can be used for travel and sports as well. In terms of comfort, the major change in broom history came in 1820. The cushioning charm was invented and made sitting on a broom handle much more enjoyable.
This charm made sitting on brooms much more comfortable, however brooms were still very slow and difficult to control. They were not (at this time) intended to look nice either.
When brooms were first made, each family would make their own broom. They were unreliable and each family’s broom was different meaning you could only use your own family’s broom. Later, Witches and wizards began to buy brooms from craftsmen who made the brooms. They were still not used for speed or distance either!
After that, broom companies began to appear and brooms were mass produced in factories. Oakshaft 79 was one of the first real broom companies and the broom itself wasn't very high quality and wasn’t very popular. The moontrimmer was the first broom to really aim for height with its design. Then the silver arrow which has been called one of the first real racing brooms which aimed for speed.
There have since been many companies to make much higher quality brooms like the ones we use today. When the Ollerton brothers started the cleansweep company they created the first extremely popular brooms, they were one of the first to make them in large quantities. The comet company was also a dominant company at the time until the nimbus company came around. Finally the firebolt came around and it is now the most popular broom company in the wizarding world!
Nowadays racing brooms are common in almost every household and many witches and wizards go through lots of work to keep them in good shape.
Play-Along Activity: I told you that brooms were not usually used for sports or long distance travel but later we started to use them for different things. Think of something else you could use a broom for! They should be goofy things or anything to make us laugh but if you want to take a more serious approach to this you can! Be creative and think outside the box!
