Chapter 5- Origin of the Snitch

Chapter 5
In order to understand the origin of the snitch, we need to understand the hunting of the bird called the snidget. This is where the snitch gets its name. Snidgets were hunted quite commonly in the wizarding world. They were incredibly small and had incredible wing joints making it nearly impossible to catch them. They look like very round hummingbirds. One could get quite a lot of money if you caught a snidget because if the difficulty in doing so.

The snidget originally came into quidditch in 1296 because of a man named Barberus Bragge. The snidget was released into the match and Bragge stated that he would pay 150 gold to the player who caught the bird first. At the time, this was equivalent to over a million gold today! All the players immediately went after the bird and no one played the game. The snidget had to be continuously pushed back into the field by repelling charms. It was caught by a women in the audience who felt bad for the poor bird.

After this, snidgets were being released at almost every quidditch match but this time only one player was assigned to catching it rather than the whole team. This caused the snidget to become endangered. In order to hopefully save some snidgets, Bowman Wright invented our modern snitch. Bowman Wright spent a very long time working on it. He made it exactly the size and weight of a snidget and it had rotational joints like the bird. The snitch was bewitched to stay within the boundaries of the field as well. So the crowd did not have to repel it. Today, catching the snitch earns the team an extra 150 points in honor of the 150 gold that was originally offered.

Play-Along Activity: Write a few sentences about weather or not you think the snitch made quidditch a better game. Do you think we should have kept the origional game?
