Chapter 4- Quidditch Balls
Chapter 4
We use the quaffle, the snitch, and bludger in quidditch
Lets start out with the bludger! The bludger was the second ball to ever be used in quidditch. They were added just a few days after the game was invented. In the early days of quidditch, they were simply large rocks that were bewitched to follow the players! Later they were changed to lead since rocks could be smashed by bats!
It turns out, that lead can also be smashed by the bats so they were replaced with iron ones. They were also originally called blooders!
Next, Ill go over the quaffle. I’m sure many of you know a lot about this one! It was the first ball ever to be added to quidditch since the game originally used only the quaffle. Scoring with the quaffle gives a team 10 points as you probably already know. The quaffle was not originally bewitched at all but was just a ball made of leather. Nowadays, there is a gripping charm which was added in 1875. Before gripping charms, we used straps and three holes on the ball in order to be able to hold it. Today, quaffles are 12 inches in diameter and are colored red!
It also has enchantments that ensure it doesn’t land on the ground since it is bothersome to get it back into the air.
Finally, the snitch! I won't go too into detail about this one, though there is much to learn about it! The snitch was the latest ball to be added and it was invented by bowman wright. It has rotational joints and small wings to match the bird it was modeled after. Catching the snitch gives a player 150 points and also stops the game altogether.
The snitch is one of the most fascinating balls in quidditch and there will be a later chapter going into more detail on this topic.
