Chapter 2- Brief History of Brooms and their Invention
Chapter 2
Before brooms came around the only way to take flight was becoming an animagus. If you were lucky, you might be able to become a bird of some kind. Before brooms, hovering, or short term flight were the only types of levitation possible.
So why did wizards choose brooms to give flight abilities to? The reason is because a broom blends into a household setting very well and isn’t too awkward to fly around on. So they blend in well!
The earliest forms of brooms were handmade and almost nothing like the ones we see today. Some were merely hazel twigs tied to unvarnished ash.
Each family made their own brooms by hand. Early brooms were often inconsistent and difficult to use. Using another broom that wasn’t your own was nearly impossible for that reason.
The first recorded brooms were made around the year 962, but these brooms were not made for games of any sort. Brooms were made for purely practical reasons. (getting from point A to point B)
Early brooms were also not very fast and had horrible turning speeds. Early brooms weren’t nice looking at all either.
It wasn't until the 12 century that witches and wizards began to pay for services from a specialized broom maker.
After this development, the wizarding world began to use brooms more and more often and it was only after this point that we began inventing games to play on brooms.
In 1926 three Ollerton brothers started up the cleansweep company and sparked interest in racing brooms and brooms made for speed rather than a practical use.
Since then, the wizarding world has further developed the broom and it’s now found in almost every household. It’s also used mostly for pleasure and for games nowadays.
Play-Along Activity: Imagine another object that the wizarding world could have used to fly on aside from brooms. Write a few sentences describing it.
