Chapter 14- The Referee
Chapter 14
During the early days of quidditch referees were called quijudges. It is the job of the referee to stop and start matches and release the balls at the beginning.
Being a referee is incredibly difficult for quite a few reasons. First of all, there are tons of rules that they need to have memorized. There are also 14 players on the field that need to be watched all at once. At official matches there are other people there who help them keep an eye on the match.
The referee is often on the ground or looking around the pitch. For that reason the most common injury is actually neck strain. Although neck strain is the most common referees have been the victims of broom tampering in the past.
At one match the referees broom was made into a port key! When the referee got on the broom and were transferred to a desert and not seen for 4 months! However, nowadays it is much less common for referees to get hurt due to newer rules. Only one person has ever died as a quabbleball referee despite all the danger.
Since the position is so difficult they need to be very strong and brave. The official referees are chosen by the department of magical games and sports at the ministry. They need to take flying tests and memorize the rules of the game. Referees also need to be trusted not to tamper with the match in any way.
Play-Along Activity: Do you think being a referee is worth the effort that it takes to become one? Why or why not?
