Reasons why you should befriend with a Ravenclaw
Chapter 4
1. Ravenclaws are extremely interesting
Starting off with the most obvious reason to befriend a Ravenclaw – they’re smart. And we’re not just saying that’s a good thing because they’ll be able to help you do your tax return.
Ravenclaws are curious about the world, which makes for fascinating company. They’ll always be able to let you know about a great new book they’ve read, or fill you in on current events, or be so witty they’ll make you look great if you bring them as your plus-one to a wedding reception.
Basically, you’ll never be stuck talking about the weather with a Ravenclaw. Your friendship is likely to be based on deeper, more philosophical conversations – rather than ‘how was your weekend?’
2.You will never doubt how much you matter to a Ravenclaw
Ravenclaws are logical and rational and will always have an argument to hand when it comes to backing up their friends.
Take Cho Chang and her fellow Ravenclaw friend Marietta Edgecombe. In Order of the Phoenix, Marietta betrays Dumbledore’s Army – and henceforth breaks out in boils that spell out the word ‘sneak’.
Cho instantly stuck up for her. This was pretty gutsy considering that Cho had recently lost her boyfriend Cedric Diggory to Lord Voldemort, the exact force that Dumbledore’s Army are trying to fight against. Yet she still stuck up for the person who betrayed them. Siding with Marietta also hammered the final nail in the coffin for her and Harry’s not-quite relationship, but to be honest, the writing was already on the wall that they probably weren’t meant to be.
3.Ravenclaws can see past the surface
Ravenclaw is the house for ‘those of wit and learning’, which can lead to deep intuition in a friendship as well as, say, achieving ‘Oustanding’ in all N.E.W.T.s.
Ravenclaws pay attention to the world around them – and that also means paying attention to their friends. Not all of us wear our hearts on our sleeves – but Ravenclaws are practically Legilimens when it comes to knowing when a pal needs help. A Ravenclaw can read you like a book… even when you’re using a Polyjuice Potion and disguised as a completely different person.
4.Ravenclaws work hard on their friendships
A Ravenclaw is smart enough to know that a lasting friendship requires putting in effort – and if there’s one thing a Ravenclaw’s propensity to complete homework months in advance proves, it’s that they never shy away from putting in the hard yards.
Think about the effort that Luna Lovegood goes to, to support Ron before Gryffindor’s Quidditch match against Slytherin. If bewitching a hat into a life-size lion’s head isn’t friendship, we don’t know what is.
5.Ravenclaws take friendship seriously
For Ravenclaws ‘the cleverest would always be the best’ – so sings the Sorting Hat in Goblet of Fire. But friendships are to be cherished, even more than intelligence. That’s an important lesson for anyone to learn – and given their love of learning, you can be assured that Ravenclaws know it.
‘Luna had decorated her bedroom ceiling with five beautifully painted faces: Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny and Neville. They were not moving as the portraits at Hogwarts moved, but there was a certain magic about them all the same: Harry thought they breathed. What appeared to be fine golden chains wove around the pictures, linking them together, but after examining them for a minute or so, Harry realized that the chains were actually one word, repeated a thousand times in golden ink: friends… friends… friends… friends…
