Charms Journal: Writing Guide by Mina Lofthouse
written by Mina Lofthouse
In Year One of Charms, all students are asked to keep a journal of their progress in Charms class. It is meant to be a record of thoughts and observations during class, as well as a record of students practising the charms they learned. As many students are uncertain about what exactly such a Charms Journal is meant to entail, this writing guide will be updated with the most commonly asked questions.

I don’t understand what a journal is?
Please look here.
How long should my Journal Entry be?
The journal should be in sufficient detail to allow you to express your thoughts and observations on the required items. See the prompt details about the number of paragraphs / sentences required.
Is there a maximum length?
There is no maximum length for journals. Please do keep in mind though that it should still be an appropriate length.
Can we add handwritten images of the journals?
You can, as long as it is legible. Provide us with a link and make sure the link works and is set to public viewing, or a password is given to access it. If you submit your journal as multiple pictures, please label them clearly so that we know the right order.
How can I submit a handwritten journal, pictures, a creative approach, …?
Through any viable link sharing website provided the link is set to public viewing or a password is provided with it. (e.g. GoogleDocs, directupload, …)
Why do we need to write a journal?
Please look here.
Do the professors read the Journal Entries that we write?
Yes, they do. The team of Charms PAs and Professor Virneburg read and grade all Journal Entries.
May I send you a word document as an email?
Unfortunately no, but you can send a link (upload it to GoogleDocs for example) in the submission box. Email submissions will not be graded.
I don’t know what to write about!
As per the prompts, you are to reflect upon the contents of the lessons. You can write about what you learned, the practice of the Charms discussed, how you felt about it or just an overall observation of the lesson itself but bear in mind that it must be Charms related.
May I write my journal entry as a list of notes or bullet points?
Yes, but the list has to be in sufficient detail and should show equal effort as one would have in paragraph form. Be careful that you do not just regurgitate the lesson content!
