CHRM-101: Lesson 2: Spellcasting Basics
Chapter 4
Magical power and people
The source of our magic is unknown. We don't know from where it comes, but we can feel it and know how to use it. We access it subconsciously and without effort. With some practice, we can learn how to direct it and it becomes easier over time. The easiest way to feel it is through visualization.
Based on the magic ability, we distinguish between:
To better explain, "In the case of Dementors, Muggles can not see or sense them, squibs can only sense them, and wizards and witches can see them and protect themselves against Dementors."
By the magic ancestry, we destinguish Wizards/Witches between:
Spellcasting Components
They are needed to perform a spell.
Only great Wizards are able to cast magic without wand directly in hand, or without Pronunciation.
Flight charms
The spells that move object in the air.
Hover Charm
Incantation: Levioso (lev-ee-O-so)
Wand Movement: Inward spiral then upward flick
Willpower: Moderate; determines how heavy of an object can be lifted.
Concentration: None
Usability: you must physically touch the object in some degree, can move up and down
Rocket Charm
Incantation: Alarte Ascendare (A-lar-tay a-SEN-day-ray)
Wand Movement: Quick swish
Willpower: High; determines how high the object will ascend before falling
Concentration: None
Usability: object moves up and down fast
Floating Charm
Incantation: Fluito (floo-EE-toe)
Wand Movement: Jab then upward flick
Willpower: High to very high depending on weight and distance of target
Concentration: Moderate; should be maintained on target object
Usability: you can control the time of "flight", but you must control object verticaly
Levitation Charm
Incantation: Wingardium Leviosa (win-GAR-dee-um levi-O-sa)
Wand Movement: Swish and flick
Willpower: Low; Visualize your energy coming from your body and lifting the object.
Concentration: Moderate; on the thing you want to levitate
Usability: true flying of an object
The Levitation Charm, invented by Jarleth Hobart, is the most useful and hardest to perform of them all, and also the wand movement is very important to direct the moving object. Warning: do NOT use it on humans until you are sure what you are doing!
Lesson Two Worksheet (Assignment): Tips and tricks
This one is a bit harder than previous one. Be focused on this one:
- What is a Squib? (tip: never refer to a Squib as a Muggle)
Lesson Two Short Answer (Assignment): Tips and tricks
- What are your wand's characteristics (wood, core, length and flexibility)? (tip: use Pottermore. Some other references to find it manually: Wandlore For Beginners by Kendall Cochran, Coleman's Book Of Wands by Matthew Coleman, or HP Wikia: Wand)
- Which spellcasting component do you feel is most important and why? (tip: include your emotions and pick only one)
Describe Your Wand (Essay): Tips and tricks
Try to remember what happened when you got the wand. Include your feelings, and tell the story.
Learn Levitation Charm well, and you won't need any other flying spell. But it's the hardest to master. The key is in concentration. PS: I'm Pureblood.

Based on the magic ability, we distinguish between:
Wizard/Witch Has magic in the blood and has magic ability
Squib Has at least one magic parent and has no magic ability, but can sense it and
use some magical objects
Muggle Has no magic ability and has no magic parent

By the magic ancestry, we destinguish Wizards/Witches between:
Pureblood Wizard/Witch who has only magical ancestorsIn advance, we will refer to Wizard/Witch as Wizard.
Halfblood Has one Muggle and one Wizard parent, or history of Muggle blood in ancestry
Muggleborn Wizard/Witch with both Muggle parents
