CHRM-101: Lesson 1: Introduction to Charms

Chapter 3
Journals
Over the course, you should be keeping your journal. In journal you should write about your thoughts and observations; this should include both while being in class and practice outside of it (in the dormitories, for example). You will be asked to turn in the journal more or less on each 2 lessons. A journal entry should be made for each lesson (2-9, lesson 1 is optional). The minimum for each journal entry is 2 paragraphs, with each having minimum of 5 sentences.

History
In ancient times migic was widely practiced in Greece and Egypt. For example, we can see magic curses defending ancient tombs even today. The history overview goes like this:

before 382 B.C.E. unreliable wands*
382 B.C.E. first wand ever made
1000 C.E. Wizarding World began separating from Muggles
1000-1400 rule by the Council of Warlocks
1400 establishment of various magical governments
1600 spointless witch burnings (Flame-Freezing Charm)
1689 International Statute of Secrecy separated Wizarding World from Muggles.
1875 Decree for the Reasonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery established.

Witch burnings were the trigger for the International Statute of Secrecy law, and it was created to protect Magical and Muggle communities from each other (so to say, it protects both communities). The law took 3 years to be widely established. Muggles forgot about Magical World.

Decree for the Reasonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery says that students aren't allowed to practice magic outside of school, magical locations near them (Hogsmeade, for example), or exception zones. However, a student is allowed to cast magic anytime and anywhere, if it is needed to save a human life (Wizard or Muggle). The Trace spell works in an area of the underage Wizard, and is in power until a Wizard or Witch turns 17 years old. Breaking the law is punishable by The Ministry of Magic.

Charms

The Wand-Lighting Charm was invented by Levina Monkstanley, who first practiced it in 1772. Uses include amusement, casting vote, and to repel incorporeal threats- malevolent spirits, Gytrash (a vicious spectral hound), for example. Keep the wand in hand to maintain the spell.

Incantation: Lumos (pronounced ‘LOO-mos’)
Wand Movement: Single counter-clockwise loop
Willpower: Low (determines the color of the light**)
Concentration: Low (lighting up the top of your wand)

The Wand-Extinguishing Charm is used to counter The Wand-Lighting Charm***. It works only for the wand you have in hand. Spell can't backfire.

Incantation: Nox (pronounced ‘NOCK-ss’)
Wand Movement: Flick of the wand
Willpower: None
Concentration: None

* These wands just sucked. Seriously.
** The idea to experiment?
*** If you forget the Incantation, just throw the wand in the air. The light will go off.

Lesson One Worksheet (Assignment): Tips and tricks

All answers should be pretty easy to answer. Just check my notes. Pay special attention to these:
- Which of the following is not a use of the Wand-Lighting Charm? (tip: The Wand-Lighting Charm and The Wand-Extinguishing Charm can't have same use, because they are oppsite to each other)
- The purpose of the International Statute of Secrecy includes what? (tip: re-read a part of the note about it)

Introduction / Charms Journal (Essay): Tips and tricks

- Make sure to meet the requirements described above.
- Part One - Introduction. Just throw in some emotions.
- Part Two - Journal Plan. Try to describe what suits you and how will your journal look like. Think about how you would make a journal entry for first lesson if you had to make it right now (even if it's not required).

Checked the Library books. A History Of Magic doesn't note anything about first wands, burning witches, etc. Such a shame.

Put the wand in your nose and do the The Wand-Lighting Charm. It's so funny, just don't let your mommy find it out.

Lumos is a great way to annoy others in your dormitory. These charms are too easy to perform.
