Imaginative Incantations: A Non-Standard Book Of Spells

Imaginative Incantations serves as an encyclopaedic compendium of spells far beyond the standard coursework of magical education. Its collection ranges from the ancient to the cutting-edge, from the arcane to the commonplace. This tome is imaginatively put together to present the idiosyncratic nature of spell invention, as well as to inspire the reader to pursue their own journey in learning and magical experimentation. (Work-in-progress. Occassional updates. Check back often!) Last update: 3 May 2014 Hiatus until: 20 May 2014 (tentative) Upcoming updates: Spells for Chapter 7-9 (Fire and Water), possible illustrations on spell symbols! (Disclaimer: While strictly faithful to the primary canon, it is not so for semi-canon (movies, games). It does take many creative liberties in filling up the gaps, and I hope inspires your own imagination. This is a lifelong wish of having a complete spell book, hence the indulgent number of original spells. Hope you enjoy!) Tags: Charms, hexes, jinxes, curses, transfiguration, enchantments.

Preface

Chapter 1

The spirit
of discovery and experimentation is crucial in magic. With it, we grow in
magical ability, develop a better understanding in magic, and perhaps even
discover novel ways of performing magic. This would not be possible without a
comprehensive education of magic, one that fully explores its depth and breadth.
Thus it is with these attitudes in mind that Imaginative Incantations was compiled. A wide selection of primary
sources, arcane and widely known, was used in putting together this
near-exhaustive collection of spells.

This tome
has many useful functions, whether it is as a young wizard’s guide, an advanced
practitioner’s reference, or a useful household encyclopedia. Fundamentally, Imaginative Incantations is a sortilegium
(or a grimoire, to use the archaic term), a compendium of all spells for
any situation or purpose. However, it also presents emerging themes of magical theory as well as historical accounts of spell discovery.
Hopefully you, the reader, are able to take away something useful, be it
insights to develop your magical ability and knowledge, or inspiration to
discover new magic.

The emphasis
of Imaginative Incantations is really
on imaginative incantations – spells and enchantments beyond your regular
magical education. Hopefully, you will grow and appreciation for the staggering
diversity and immensity of magical knowledge, and take your learning in
creative and uncharted directions towards the frontiers of magic and spell
discovery. While spells are organised into unifying themes, you are highly
encouraged to look for connections between the seemingly unrelated. True
discovery comes from looking into the gaps between the gaps of knowledge, the
space between spaces.

With this,
good luck and have fun in your journey through magic. Be brave to wander off
the path, for it may lead you to the fringe of magical knowledge, and go deep,
for you may arrive at insight and wizarding wisdom.

[A Personal Note:
This
work is a personal, ambitious effort to imagine a world full of unknown and
varied incantations. Much of the work may be non-canonical, but great attempts
are made to fit it within the primary canon. I hope you appreciate the indulgent
imagination, and hope that it would in turn spur your own creativity. I still
do appreciate comments, especially those about conflict with canon, or those on
underexploited opportunities.]
