The Times Come
Chapter 7
“Are you ready, dear?” Mom asks. We are about to go into the Mayor’s office. My Mother helped me to get an appointment with the Mayor. We want to ask the Mayor if there is any way to get the Swenson Museum back, even if the Swenson’s aren’t able to take it. “I’m ready as I will ever be!” Mother helps me open the doors to the Mayor’s office . We walk to a desk where a young lady is sitting. “Hello there! How may I help you?” Mom tells the woman that we have an appointment to see the Mayor. “ The door is just to the right down the hall!” She responds. “Let's go!” Mom says. After a few minutes, we arrive at the Mayor's room. “Let's go” I repeat with a smile. Before my hand even touches the handle, the door flings open. “Why hello!” Says a big loud voice. A short stubby man is standing in the doorway. He has on a black suit with an orange tie. His hair is elegantly smoothed back. “Hello, Mr. Johnson!” My mother replies. I know that Mr. Johnson was our Mayor and immediately feel nervous. “My name is Mrs. Adams, and this is my daughter, Cara Adams.” The Mayor gave us a huge grin and shook each of our hands. “Hello Mrs. Adams, hello Ms. Adams!” ,says the Mayor, “I believe that you are here to talk to me about the Swenson Museum.” He says while leading us into his office, which holds nineteen other Town Council Members. I finally decide to say something “Yes we are, Mr. Johnson.” The Mayor looks at us with a sad smile. “I’m afraid that the only way to save the Museum now, is to buy it.” Mr. Johnson stops for a moment before saying: “Unless… If you could get the support… I would gladly give the Museum to you, for free! All that you would have to do is collect one-hundred signatures! ” Mom and I sit there in shock. “Actually, I have been thinking about buying the Museum, but it would be too expensive. By only getting signatures, that show the support of the town, I wouldn’t be out any money! What do you think, Cara?” Mom asks. “I would be happy to help you collect signatures!” I smile the biggest smile that I can manage. “All in favor?” The Mayor calls out to his Council. “All in favor!” The Council calls. A slip of paper is passed around the room and every Council Member, including the Mayor, signs it . The Mayor then hands us the slip of paper. I beam at it with pride. It seems as if I am the happiest person in the whole world!
“All we have to do is gather a hundred signatures!” The whole family was ecstatic about being a able to own the Museum. “What could we call it? Maybe the Adams Family Museum? Or maybe the Adams Museum Of Arts?” Asks Cal. “Hold on guys, we don’t even know if we will be able to take the Museum. We still need to collect the rest of the signatures!” Mom answers. “You know, technically the Museum will belong to Cara. She is the one who asked to see the Mayor!” Dad says. “Your Father is right.” Mom replies. “Well then if the job of the signatures is mine, I think I already know a few more people who would sign the paper.” I say. “Who is that, dear?” Mom and Dad ask in unison. “Why, it is all of you!” I explain in triumph. Mom pulls out the piece of paper. She writes her name and then passes it down to Cal and Dad. “There, now we have twenty-three signatures. Only seventy-seven more to go!” I said.
When I got to school the next morning, I headed straight to my classroom to ask my teacher for a signature. “Of course I will sign, my dear!” My teacher exclaimed. During the rest of my breaks, I went to all of the other teachers for signatures. Overall I got seven signatures from my school.
After I got into Mom’s car with Cal, I told her: “We now have thirty signatures, Mom!” Mom grins at me and then starts driving down the street. Instead of going home as we usually do, we head to the Historical Research Building. “I knew you could do it, Cara” Cal whispers to me. We are off to a good start!
When we finally get to the Historical Research Building, we went straight to work. After about a half-hour, we collected ten signatures from the workers. “How many signatures in total do we have now, Hun?” Mom asks. “We have about forty signatures in total!” I say with great pride. Next we head downtown. We walk around for about an hour and collect sixty signatures. “Mom! Mom! We have all one-hundred signatures!” I cry out in pure and utter joy. “Congratulations, everyone!” Dad says happily. “I just knew we could do it! I just knew it!” Cal cries. Mom just stands there, speechless. “ I think that we can make this dream, into reality!” Mom says finally.
Everyone is as happy as can be!
“Congratulations, Ms. Adams!” The Mayor was just as happy as we were about achieving out goal of one-hundred signatures. He handed me the key and gave me a big hug. “Thank you so much, Mr. Johnson!” I felt like I was going to cry. “Come on dear! Let’s go!” Mom lead me out to the car where Cal and dad were waiting. “Let’s get to that Museum!” Dad cried. Thankfully, only the outside of the Museum had been torn apart. All of the books and belongings of the museum were ours!
Finally! We arrived at the Museum! I rushed into the doors (After I had some difficulty with the key!). Everything was just the way I remembered it! All of the books were lined up on their shelves. The exhibits were all neat and tidy. No mouse to be seen! I couldn’t wait for the Museum to be officially opened again!
