Chapter 5: The First Mistake

Chapter 5
I got some great feedback on that last chapter thanks to all of you reading this, please keep the support coming, and sorry that it’s so late, but please enjoy chapter 5! All rights go to J.K.Rowling, none of this is my copied off her.

It was an easy job considering all that he had done before, all that Peeves had to do was to make sure that he had a ice clone at Hogwarts before he left for his mission. After using that power that he had hidden for the better part of the millenium, he had finally done it again, while it took a lot longer than it had all those years ago, after he had gotten the feel for it, the familiar chill of letting his magic flow through his body comforted him, but made him realize that after all this time, he had began to lose his touch with the powers that he was born with. With a rush of cold wind flowing throughout the room, a piece of ice started to start to appear out of thin air and started to shape into a perfect replica of him. After about 10 minutes, it was completely finished, his ice clone, or as he decided to call it Marcus began normal duties of sitting around the room and studying. Marcus was a perfect copy of Peeves down to the very last hair on his head, the only difference was that Marcus had less magic power as well as that his spells were less potent than the originals, finally, Marcus could be hurt a lot easily by fire, since he was completely made out of ice, one good thing that came out of this though was that once Marcus was destroyed, accidentally or purposefully, that Peeves would automatically receive all of the memories of the solid clone of ice immediately, now that Peeves thought about it, why didn’t he just make a shit ton of these clones, have them all study the topics in the library, then each clone would be able to relay the info to him after he destroyed them all, and it would be easy to just have all of the clones use a transfiguration spell to change them to look like random other students. It was genius, and Peeves gave himself a pat on the back for a having a good idea for the first time in a while. That wasn’t important right now though as he had a target to take out, and he wouldn’t take himself out if he just sat there dilly dallying ways to use his ice clone more effectively. After that thought, he immediately apparated out of the castle and started his preparations.
He had spent 2 days after that to gather all of the information on his Target, and had even got his name, but had erased that from his mind, it was always harder to think of them as human, though not because it made them seem more innocent and would eat at his conscious, but because it made him hungry, just the thought of it made his stomach growl a bit and a small bit of drool started to leak out before schooling himself and jumping out the window. Now that might sound crazy for a normal person, but this was the reason why Peeves had never been caught doing a job before, and his level of planning is also why his prices are so high, when you’re in this kind of business, there isn’t a lot of room for errors, and if you mess up just a little too much, well then many things can happen, such as you get caught, and executed, you die, or you get lucky and nothing happens. Sadly for Peeves, the last one never happened to him at all. After he finished cursing his bad luck, he started off to plan for the assassination.
He had decided to do it on thursday, arguably one of the laziest days of the week, there were many factors involved, but the main one was that the Target had a habit of going to the cafe almost always on Thursdays, but Peeves had experienced that, in fact, he had once gone inside and had sat there for hours sipping some coffee while getting use to the atmosphere there. Since Peeves was connected to the nature, he could almost integrate himself into any type of place he wanted, but it required concentration as well as time. Since cafe’s are one of the only places you can go to just relax a bit, and enjoy your time, he let himself have 3 hours of sitting there. After 3 allocated amount of time, he got up and started back home. He had learned many things during this time, such as how many people were at the cafe at the time, who had the shift at what times, how the cashier liked to flirt with almost everyone, himself included, but most importantly what the target ordered usually. That was they key to my plan working. You see, Peeves plan was very simple and had a 98.6% chance of working, this made him very happy since he wouldn’t have to think of any other plans just this once.
Thursday came, he called the cashier and told her that his Grandfather Alvin had fallen sick, and would like to have her come up so that the doctors could run some tests on her. That took Janie out of the picture, so he changed his appearance into her and headed to “work.” “Hey Jane.” was the first thing she heard when she got to the cafe, it was her boss,”I thought that you weren’t able to make it today?” “Well it turned out ok,and so i’m here” she saluted with a salute while putting on her uniform. Peeves went through the rest of the day doing the normal routine, and at about 4:15, the Target walked in. Peeves had made preparations throughout the day, and was ready to enact on his plan. It was simple really, as all that he had to do was put a small possession charm that would allow him to take control of his body, so after the correct amount of time, Peeves and the target’s conscious would switch, sadly, that meant the target would also be in control of his body, except that he had already planned that out, he would be sleeping. He had set it so that the charm would switch them at 4:00am. The target would be sleeping, and would not be awake, but just in case, he had set the switch late, so it was almost a guarantee that his plan was a success.
At exactly 7:00, Peeves got off his shift and headed home. Peeves enjoyed the rest of the day at the beautiful city he was in, got some groceries and apparated them back to Hogwarts, no way was he going to eat all of the unhealthy food that was being served there, and who know what kind of charms of spells were placed on them, I mean, they appeared without being apparated there by a person, that obviously meant that there was already a charm for portaling. Who else knew what could have been added to the food there, that plus the fact the food was almost all protein and sugar, with zero actual natural vitamins, and a lot of sugar that would slow him down in a fight. Finished with criticizing the food, Peeves apparated back to Hogwarts. He appeared back in his dorm, where his clone was already waiting for him, with a snap of his fingers, Marcus exploded in a wave of snowflakes that dissolved into the air soon after. Peeves had braced himself, but then the rush had hit, a flood of homework answers, books he had read, and his roomates’ names, personalities, preferred study habits, and what they liked to do for fun. He knew all he needed to know about his “roomates” now. They weren’t that interesting, but “Peeves” had established good connections with them, and it seemed that they saw him as a good friend. However, there were people from other houses that caught his eye though, one from Hufflepuff and the other from Gryffindor. Both girls, and yet there seemed to be something special about these two. The clone couldn’t get much from them except their names… Sadly, all at once, the exhaustion from scouting, working the day, and the force of the clone’s memories all hit Peeves at once, almost knocking him out right there, but he managed to stay awake enough to drunkenly stumble back into his bed before succumbing to the exhaustion.
Peeves was dozing off by himself when he felt the pulling sensation in his body, it was always weird when spells activated by themselves without you knowing about it. There’s a minute of panic before you realize that it can’t hurt you, and after that it’s just a pleasant ride. After what felt like a couple minutes but was in actuality about a millisecond, Peeves found himself lying in an ornately carved silk bed with a chandelier, as well as multiple furs around him. He took all this information in quickly, and then set out to complete his job.
Peeves had decided to let the Target die of falling down the stairs. He was a very obese man, and this would easily be plausible if found during the middle of the night when his eyesight could not see in such dim conditions. He had his plan, but to carry it out was not as easily done. The most important thing was to make sure that he activated the spell before he actually broke his neck, or else he would be the one to perish and not the Target. This however had been done many times by him before, so the motion came smoothly. After arriving at the double staircase, Peeves merely activated the spell, giving it a second to start up, and then closed his eyes and jumped. Again the pulling sensation was felt, and a minute later, he was back in his bed for executing a once again successful job.
The next day brought quite a surprise for Peeves though. When he woke up, his dorm mates where there already getting ready to go. Seeing as how last night he was up so late, Peeves had for the first time slept in a while. He quickly adapted though and was able to catch up to his fellow Slytherins as they went down to the great hall. After that though, the day was rather normal, Peeves fell asleep in some classes, payed rapt attention in others, and spent his day normally. That is until dinner came. It started off usually, with him tossing the food as soon as it appeared, and just chatting with his table friends, but after the owls came, he got some rather interesting news. The target had been disposed of certainly, but it seems that it was caught on camera, and since Peeves deliberately caused the man to fall on the stairs, it seemed to the public as more of an accident. This was not the interesting part, or rather the disgraceful part. No, it was the fact that he had been caught on camera, what happened there was complete and total accident, anybody who had half a mind and knew about possession would easily identify the way that the victim’s eyes were glossed over, or how the Target seemed to have a limp in his right shoulder. Finally, the way he walked was the biggest indicator, if anyone know what he walked like, and also knew about Peeve’s walk, then it would be very easy to guess that this was an assassination and not suicide.
Luckily, no one really knew what he did, or could trace it back to him, however, this could bring down his price. This was not good, Peeves was known as the one who never failed to bring down his target while seeming to completely remove himself from the equation. For Peeves though, it was just a failure staring into his face. He would not let this happen again, he would pay more attention, and most importantly, he would regain his pride for being the “Untraceable assassin” no matter what it cost.

Sorry guys, I know that it’s been a super long time since I updated the story, but I kinda just lost my feel for writing. HIH just didn’t appeal to me that much after a while, but pretty much today, I got back on and saw what they did and I guess my passion for writing is back again. I promise to never go dark again without telling you guys, so please send me feedback, I need as much as I can to keep on writing, and as always owl me if you want to be part of the story.
The 2 mentioned in this story are Brielle Evans and Vanessa Gryffindor, please go and check them out. Hope you enjoyed, i’ll post next chapter probably in the next couple days seeing we have school off. In any case happy reading!
