You maybe don´t want to kill someone even if they try to kill you or have killed someone else. If you don´t, in a near death situation it can be good to use expelliarmus, protecto, or stupify. It would also be good if you'd practiced non verbal spells to.
If you need to kill the one who tries to kill you (like famous Harry Potter) there are some spells that are killing spells but not avada kedavra. The reason why avada kedavra is illegal and not the rest of the killing spells are because avada kedavra has no protection.
I wouldn't say that´t if you kill 30 people but do not use the avada kedavra spell you would´t go to azkaban, even if it did sound so a little bit. anyways, here are the killing spells:

sectumsempra
stupify from height
Good spells to do before you do these spells are obliviate, witch will make them forget what they are doing and petrificus totallus, see chapter in a duell.
