Why?
Chapter 3
The reasons I think he treated Slytherins better than Gryffindors are these:
1. He had been bullied by Gryffindors during his youth
2. Slytherin was his house
3. He wanted to be hard on Harry so that Harry learned
4. He related to Draco Malfoy
He in a way bullied his students and were unkind to them because that was the only way he had ever been treated during his life so that was the only thing he knew. He actually helped Harry, Ron and Hermoine a lot by keeping professor Quirell at bay for as long as he did, muttering a counter-curse when Harry's broom was bewitched, telling them it looked suspicious when they were inside on a nice day, not engaging Harry in a duel when Harry was firing spells at him after Dumbeldore's death, passing on the knowledge that Harry was a Horcrux to Harry before he died, healing Draco Malfoy when Harry accidentally almost killed him and therefore preventing Harry from becoming a murderer, teaching him Occlumency for a little bit, firing spells at other Death Eaters to buy Harry time when Harry was being moved from Privet Drive to The Burrow also he accidentally helped Harry by leaving his old potions textbook in the potions classroom which Harry found. He was never a very social person to begin with so this also explains part of why he was a bad teacher.
