History of Magic in the American Continents
written by Wayah Barry
Shamans, medicine men, magical creatures, astronomy, divination. The influence of magic had strong impact on the communities that inhabited the continent pre-Columbus and continues to effect the magic community in America today. About the author: I am Eastern Band Cherokee and grew up hearing myths and stories of my tribe. This is my attempt to creatively tie my research of Native American mythology with the Harry Potter Universe. *This is not meant to offend anyone, it is purely fictional. I will respect the spiritual practices and beliefs of Native American tribes and be as factual as I can.

Bigfoot and Chenoo
Chapter 8
Known today as Bigfoot or Sasquatch, this mysterious creature who tends to avoid contact with humans by living in isolated, heavily forested areas was known by many different names by multiple tribes on the east coast and Pacific Northwest of the United States. The Wabanaki and Micmac call this monster Chenoo, and its origin story involved a human committing a terrible crime, possibly cannibalism, which turned his heart to ice.
The creature is an ice giant possessed by an evil spirit according to some sightings. Other descriptions claim the monster is human-like, but gigantic in stature and covered in hair. Also, the creature is usually sighted at night, indicating it is nocturnal. One power of the Chenoo is its horrible shriek, which is said to kill those who hear it instantly. Nobody has lived to tell the tale to verify this, however.
In 1892 there was a Great Sasquatch Rebellion, when the nation's Sasquatch population rebelled against the MACUSA when the Magical Congress attempted to tighten control on America's magical creatures. After this uprising, the MACUSA headquarters moved from Washington to New York. This event was the first time in recorded history that sasquatches banded together and there were a record number of sightings as the sasquatch representatives made their voices heard to MACUSA. SInce then sightings have been rare and the Big Foot community have returned to their isolated habitats across the North American forests. More information can be found in O'Flaherty's book "Big Foot's Last Stand".
