History of Magic in the American Continents

written by Wayah Barry

Shamans, medicine men, magical creatures, astronomy, divination. The influence of magic had strong impact on the communities that inhabited the continent pre-Columbus and continues to effect the magic community in America today. About the author: I am Eastern Band Cherokee and grew up hearing myths and stories of my tribe. This is my attempt to creatively tie my research of Native American mythology with the Harry Potter Universe. *This is not meant to offend anyone, it is purely fictional. I will respect the spiritual practices and beliefs of Native American tribes and be as factual as I can.

Thunderbird

Chapter 7
The Thunderbird is an important creature to the indigenous peoples of North America, and multiple tribes from all over the continent have stories related to the thunderbird. They are closely related to the European Phoenix. According to Algonquian legends, the thunderbird controls the upper world and has the power to throw lightning and create thunder with its wings. Ojibwe mythology says that the Thunderbirds were created to fight underwater spirits and punish humans that broke moral rules. Tribes in the Pacific Northwest also have legends of the thunderbirds.

Thunderbirds are rare creatures, but can be found all across the North American continent. They are both intelligent, and very powerful. They are known to affect the weather, and control rain, hail, and thunderstorms. One can recognize a thunderbird by its enormous size and wingspan, and according to most stories it is very brightly colored. Sightings are rare however, and no sightings have been recorded in over two centuries.
