History of Magic in the American Continents
written by Wayah Barry
Shamans, medicine men, magical creatures, astronomy, divination. The influence of magic had strong impact on the communities that inhabited the continent pre-Columbus and continues to effect the magic community in America today. About the author: I am Eastern Band Cherokee and grew up hearing myths and stories of my tribe. This is my attempt to creatively tie my research of Native American mythology with the Harry Potter Universe. *This is not meant to offend anyone, it is purely fictional. I will respect the spiritual practices and beliefs of Native American tribes and be as factual as I can.

Cherokee Myths: Little People
Chapter 6
Many tribes in North America have myths of pygmy races of people that lived in secret alongside their normal sized counterparts. The myth from my tribe, Cherokee, referred to these pygmy spirits as "Little People." Because these spirits do not like to be disturbed, there is no evidence that they exist except for a few small mummies occasionally found buried in the mountains, but observations of other have described them as being only a couple of feet tall, with long hair. They are not considered bad spirits, and many of the legends claim that they are good and help people, and live at peace in nature.
The Cherokee tribe, originally found in the south eastern United States, have many myths related to these Little People, who live in the mountains and the forests. One legend surrounding them involves a boy who did not want to grow up, and remained a boy forever. To this day, these Little People are mischievous (not unlike Peeves) and play tricks on humans to keep them young at heart.
Similar to the Leprechauns of Ireland, Little People supposedly populated North America and coexisted with humans, but did not like to be disturbed or disrespected. Mummies have been found all across the country in places such as Wyoming, home of the Crow tribe who calls Little People "owners of the Earth."
