About the author: I am Eastern Band Cherokee and grew up hearing myths and stories of my tribe. This is my attempt to creatively tie my research of Native American mythology with the Harry Potter Universe. *This is not meant to offend anyone, it is purely fictional. Mayan Astronomy

Chapter 4
The Mayan magic community developed a very advanced knowledge of astronomy that was central to their society, much like how astronomy is a central field in magic today. One of the major differences between pre-Columbus Mayans and their European counterparts is that they were able to make accurate observations and calculations without the use of telescopes. Related to the Mayan's use of astronomy was their development of astrology, which was relied on in order to make predictions of the cycles of nature.

The observation of stars was important to the Mayan priests, and provided the basis for the creation of the calendar. Also, tracking the stars aided Mayan civilizations in establishing agriculture. The Mayan priests used astronomy to understand the order of the universe, and were driven by mythology to understand the universe so that they could interpret the gods' will.

In summary, astronomy was integral to Mayan civilization as was the construction of calendars and ordering of time and seasons to understand the universe, and cycles of life.
