Prologue

Chapter 1
The night he was taken was one that would haunt me for the rest of my life.
It was the silence that woke me.
I guess you never think about the background noise until it’s gone. I had never registered the humming of the electricity, or the gentle blowing of the air conditioning. The clunking of the washer and the wind in the trees had all been part of what I considered silence.
I found out the hard way that’s not what silence really is.
Silence is when the small things that you thought mattered don’t make a difference anymore.
Silence is when the Earth pauses in its spinning, planning out a tragedy for its inhabitants.
Silence is when your whole world has twisted and shriveled, blackening and writhing with agony, and you don’t know it yet.
Even then, feeling the cold, slinking qualms that made me shiver in uncertainty, I knew. I can’t explain how I knew he was gone, but deep in my essence, every part of me knew that my older brother had vanished.
The silence stretched for an eternal moment, freezing me with fear. It was pierced by the last thing that confirmed the horror I hoped I was dreaming-
My mother’s scream.
It was the second time I had ever heard her scream, and I doubted whether this time would be much better than the first. To give you an idea of what I mean, last time she screamed, my father had gone ‘missing in action’, which is just the military version of ‘probably dead’. That was five years ago, and they still haven’t found him. Mom never recovered from that night. Her sapphire eyes were still rimmed with deep purple circles that she had assumed when she answered the phone, and she had become less and less stable as time wore on. She was slightly reclusive, and didn’t talk to anyone besides me and my brothers if she didn’t have to.
I was shaken out of my brief reverie by my little brother, Atlas, knocking at my door.
“Brynna?” he asked sleepily, but I could tell by his tone that he was as scared as I was.
“Atlas, I’m here,” I reassured him, pushing my panic past me and hastily getting up from my bed to get to the door.
At six years old, Atlas personified youthful innocence. His silky brown hair was ruffled, as were his blue pajamas adorned with little dinosaurs. His gunmetal blue eyes were wide, brimming with distress, and he clutched his shoddy toy dinosaur close to his chest. His bare feet were squirming on the old brown carpet, and the hand not indelibly attached to the dinosaur was in his mouth.
“He’s gone,” Atlas stammered, alarm clear in his tone, “Dale is gone!”

((okay this seems really horrible don't judge XD))
