Overview of Gas Planets

Chapter 4
The gas planets are farther away from the Sun than the terrestrial planets. They include: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. They're all made of gas.

Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system. The Great Red Spot can be viewed with a telescope. It is believed that there has been a storm there for a long time. Jupiter is a very large planet that is mostly made up of gasses. There may be rock in its core, though. The atmosphere of Jupiter is filled with many clouds. It takes 11.86 years to revolve around the Sun. It does not experience many seasons since it is not tilted very much. It can be seen in the night sky. It is not as bright as Venus, though. It has a 69 moons, 4 of which can be seen in the night sky with a telescope. These moons are: Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.

Saturn has rings made of rock and dust around the planet. It's made of gas and slightly smaller than Jupiter. The core of Saturn is rocky while the surface is made of gasses. It takes 29.5 years in order to revolve around the Sun. There are 62 moons that orbit it. Saturn can be viewed in the night sky. It appears as a bright, yellow light.

Uranus is considered a gas planet as well as an ice planet. It is made up of ice and gas. There is much ice and rock that makes up its core. It revolves around the Sun every 84 years. It has 27 moons. Rings do surround Uranus, but they're made of dark materials, so they're hard to see. Muggles have sent out probes to visit Uranus. Uranus can be seen with a telescope in the night sky.

Just like Uranus, Neptune is considered a gas planet as well as an ice planet. It is made up of ice and gas. Ice and rock composes its core. It revolves around the Sun every 164.8 years. A telescope must be used to view it. Neptune has 14 moons. Muggles have sent out spacecraft to view Neptune.

The 4 gas planets are far away from the Sun and are harder to see with the naked eye. Uranus and Neptune, especially, require a telescope to be seen. Jupiter and Saturn are more gassy than icy while Uranus and Neptune are more icy than gassy.
