Overview of Terrestrial Planets
Chapter 3
The terrestrial planets are the closest to the Sun. They include: Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. These planets are all made of rock. Venus is the hottest of these planets and Mars is the coolest.
Despite being so close to the Sun, Mercury is not as hot as Venus because it doesn't have a cloud around it that keeps the heat in. Mercury is the closest to the Sun. It is not a very bright planet in the sky because it does not reflect much light from the Sun. It is also the smallest planet. It takes 88 days to orbit the Sun. Mercury can only be seen in the morning or evening. It cannot be seen in the afternoon or at midnight. Mercury has been visited by Muggles. It has no moons.
Venus is one of the hottest planets in the solar system even though it is farther away from the Sun than Mercury. It orbits the Sun in 224.7 days. It is very hot because a large cloud surrounds the planet, trapping heat on the surface of the planet. It is much too hot for humans to visit, although it has been visited by spacecraft sent by Muggles. It is the brightest planet in the sky. It is similar in size to Earth. Venus is visible in the morning sky because it is so bright. It is also, of course, visible in the night sky. A Muggle reported that Venus looked like a UFO. Venus displays phases that are similar to the Moon's phases. It has no moons.
Earth is the third planet from the Sun. It takes 365 days for the Earth to revolve around the Sun. Since we live on the planet, it is not possible to view it in the night sky. It is the only planet with life on it. It is the largest of the terrestrial planets. The Earth goes through seasons due to the fact that it revolves around the Sun on a tilted axis. The Earth is shaped like a sphere. The Earth has one moon.
Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun. It takes 687 days to revolve around the Sun. It appears to be red because of iron oxide. It can be seen from Earth with a telescope. It is a rocky planet. It can be viewed in the night sky. It can appear as red or butterscotch colored. It has two moons.
The four terrestrial planets are closest to the Sun and they possess very few or no moons. They are made of rock and can be viewed in the night sky with the exception of Earth as we live on it.
