Chapter 1
It was a fine day. The sky was blue, as usual. Kids were going to school. However, that wasn't happening for 10th grader Alexia. She had blue eyes, purple and pink-dyed hair, and blue lips. Alexia wasn't happy living in 1942, when the Nazis, a dangerous German party, were causing trouble. Alexia was originally happy she wasn't born, raised, or living in Poland or Czechoslovakia. The Nazis have already invaded there. Alexia's family and other kids who lived where she lived were banned from going to school. This was odd and bizarre to Alexia. Why would the Nazis invade America? There were barely any Jews in Alexia's neighborhood and town. Alexia kept looking out the window, clutching her pink diary to her chest. Suddenly, her mom walked towards her. "It's ok Alexia. We'll find something fun to do while they invade." She said. Alexia glared at her mom. "No we won't!" She yelled. "Don't you see!? We are banned from doing anything fun. The Nazis want EVERYONE in America dead!" Alexia's mom looked at her for a moment, as if she had two heads, then looked away. "Alexia, look, I know this is hard for you, but we can do anything we want indoors." She said. Alexia kept looking outside for a moment, then fury blazed in her, mixed with confusion and sadness. "What if the Nazis find us!?" She asked, tears filling up her eyes. "They won't." Alexia's mom said, looking at her daughter kindly. "If they do, remember the drill. If they bomb us, remember to find a bomb shelter." Alexia nodded slowly. "Okay, I'm gonna make my pancakes and waffles. I learned how to cook in 9th grade when the Nazis weren't invading and us Floridans were allowed to go to school. When everyone was allowed." She said. And so, Alexia went to make food for her family.
Alexia began to think while she was cooking.
Why was everything not the same? Why was God doing this to her?
