Chapter 1
It was a cold, winter night in 1999. A baby girl had just been born at 11:59 pm.
The baby’s father watched from the hospital door window, as her mother cradled the girl in her arms, smiling with a man beside her.
It’s for the best. She will never have to know until it’s time. Not until she’s 16, the man thought as he watched.
The woman glanced up at the man beside her, tears glistening in her eyes. “Isn’t she the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen?” she asked the man, and her nodded.
“Absolutely,” he answered, gently kissing the woman’s forehead.
The man at the door felt a sudden pang of jealousy. She is with them. She will grow just like any normal human would, he told himself.
“What will we call her, darling?” The man beside the woman asked.
“Her name will be.” The newly mother paused, as if it think. “Riley. Her name will be Riley.”
