written by Adelina Lovegood-Braith
Riley Carson, a girl in 8th grade, goes to a school in Florida. She has blonde hair and pretty eyes, but she has one problem. Riley was born with no vocal cords, making her unable to speak, making her mute. The only way Riley can talk to people is writing words on a page in her "voice diary", which she writes words in to try to talk to people. Somehow, Riley befriends a girl named Andrea, who was born with selective mutism, which means she is only comfortable talking to certain people. Riley soons does an experiment, and finds out she has selective mutism too when she's able to talk. Maybe Andrea and Riley have more things in common than meets the eye.

Conversation In The Treehouse
Chapter 8
Andrea smiled happily when Riley approached her treehouse. "Hey there Rils! I was expecting you." She said as she lowered the ladder to her treehouse so Riley could enter. As Riley climbed it, she smiled. "Yea, it feels good to be able to speak, well, to SOME people." She said as she entered. Andrea gasped. "Hold on, I was the same way when I was a baby, except I didn't talk when I was 10." She replied. "Yea, anyways, wanna maybe have a sleepover sometime?" Riley asked. "Sure," Andrea replied. "My house?" Riley nodded. "Yea. I'll ask my mom." She replied. Andrea smirked. "Wow, this convo is satisfying me. So, your mom only gives you permission for sleepovers or house-visiting?" She asked. Riley nodded. "Yea, my mom is pretty overprotective of me. She only lets me visit people like you and Max and possibly Alexia." She said. Andrea smiled, then raised an eyebrow. "So, your friends with that 5 Gum addict?" She asked. Riley nodded in response. "Yea, she doesn't seem that bad." Andrea looked out a "window" she made in her treehouse. "I wouldn't be friends with her if I were you." She said, seeing Alexia flirt with Max. Riley looked out the window too, and felt a little jealous. "You ok?" Andrea asked. She then noticed that Riley was looking at the two lovebirds, now making out. "Just a little jelly? I understand." She said, nodding. Riley turned around. "Look, don't tell ANYONE this." She said. "Promise?" Andrea nodded. "Promise. Now spill the beans."
"I have a crush on Max."
