written by Adelina Lovegood-Braith
Riley Carson, a girl in 8th grade, goes to a school in Florida. She has blonde hair and pretty eyes, but she has one problem. Riley was born with no vocal cords, making her unable to speak, making her mute. The only way Riley can talk to people is writing words on a page in her "voice diary", which she writes words in to try to talk to people. Somehow, Riley befriends a girl named Andrea, who was born with selective mutism, which means she is only comfortable talking to certain people. Riley soons does an experiment, and finds out she has selective mutism too when she's able to talk. Maybe Andrea and Riley have more things in common than meets the eye.

Talk or Not?
Chapter 6
Riley quickly rushed home and ran to her mom. She had to see if she could talk before it was too late. Riley didn't want to go through surgery to get her voice back. Mom looked at Riley. "Dear, is something alright? You look pretty anxious." She said, concerned. Riley took a deep breath and eyed her mother. For some reason, she put away her voice diary. She didn't need it now. "I need to tell you something." Riley suddenly said. Mom gasped. "You can talk!" She said, hugging her daughter. Riley couldn't believe it. She was able to speak! The question was, how could she? Ever since she was born, Riley had never spoken, and now she could. Then, Riley's dad walked in. "Turns out she's related to that Andrea girl." He said. "They both have selective mutism." Max was watching in the distance, very happy. It was good and awesome to know Riley let her inner voice come out.
