written by Adelina Lovegood-Braith
Riley Carson, a girl in 8th grade, goes to a school in Florida. She has blonde hair and pretty eyes, but she has one problem. Riley was born with no vocal cords, making her unable to speak, making her mute. The only way Riley can talk to people is writing words on a page in her "voice diary", which she writes words in to try to talk to people. Somehow, Riley befriends a girl named Andrea, who was born with selective mutism, which means she is only comfortable talking to certain people. Riley soons does an experiment, and finds out she has selective mutism too when she's able to talk. Maybe Andrea and Riley have more things in common than meets the eye.

Meeting Andrea
Chapter 5
Riley was stuck during class thinking all about Max. The 8th grade Fall Formal was coming up, and she was wondering who would be her date. As she went to her locker to get her voice diary, Riley noticed a girl who had dark skin, a blue french braid, and green eyes. The girl was in 8th grade too, and seemingly recognized her. "Hey Riley," The girl said. "my name's Andrea. Anyways, why are you out here?" She asked. Riley took out her voice diary again and began to write down "Looking for Max.". She ripped out the page and showed Andrea. "I know where he is." Andrea said. "Follow me." Andrea began to walk outside, and there was a gazebo. A sitting log was there, and Max was sitting on it, and he turned around. "Hey Max!" Andrea said. "Hi Riley, hi Andrea." Max replied, waving to the girls. Andrea walked away, taking something with her. "Hi Riley, can I tell you something?" Max asked. Riley nodded. "Anyways, Andrea has selective mutism, which means she only talks to people she trusts and knows." Max said. Riley nodded. She wanted to experiment to see if she could talk. Riley took out her voice diary and wrote "I have to go" on a page, ripped it out, and gave it to Max, who nodded solemnly.
